Claims for Universal Credit in Scotland have increased from an average of 20,000 per month in 2019 to over 110,000 between March 1 and April 7, highlighting the impact the Covid-19 pandemic is having on people’s finances.

More than 7500 vulnerable people in South Lanarkshire have been targeted for extra help during the coronavirus crisis.
They have been phoned by a special team set up by the council as part of a national ‘Shielding’ scheme established by the Scottish Government.
South Lanarkshire Council moved quickly to implement the local part of the scheme and by early last week had made at least one call to all of the people on a list compiled by the government with NHS input.
