Chris Pine shares his thoughts after a casting director for The O.C. said he lost out on a role due to his acne.
In 2023’s Welcome to the O.C.: The Oral History, casting director Patrick Rush talked about Pine reading for Ryan Atwood, which eventually went to Ben McKenzie.
“I hate saying this, but it’s the truth: Chris Pine was at the age where he was experiencing really bad skin problems. And it was at that point where it looked insurmountable,” Rush said in the book via the AV Club. “And as a kid who grew up with horrible skin, it just broke my heart.”
Pine appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast where he was asked about Rush’s comments and said, “It’s a part of my life. The man didn’t have to talk about it. I mean, it’s his prerogative.”
Although Pine didn’t end up in the teen drama, he would go on to star in The Princess Diaries 2 shortly after losing The O.C. role.
The actor acknowledges he had “awful skin as a teenager,” noting, “Look, I was going out for The O.C., like a teenage melodrama. I can understand why they wanted to have pretty people doing pretty things. And bad acne is not a key to [success].”
Pine said that reminding him about losing the opportunity to star in the Fox series gave him “a little bit of PTSD,” adding, “It’s no fun having bad skin. It’s no fun going to auditions when you have bad skin. It was one of the most traumatic points of my life, but it is my story.”
The actor would have a successful career starring in 2009’s Star Trek as Captain Kirk, Wonder Woman, and its sequel Wonder Woman 1984. Pine most recently made his directorial debut with Poolman, in which he also stars.

At one time, it would have been unthinkable that such a magnificent and important part of Manchester's history would one day be abandoned lie crumbling for over 40 years.

Peter Kay told him in response to the Manchester Co-Op’s continued delays which pushed the latter’s opening week gigs back twice. The brand new 23,500-capacity venue – the largest in the UK once it officially opens – has infamously been plagued by teething problems that have caused multiple delays.Comedian Kay was supposed to open the venue with gigs on April 23 and 24, but following a test event featuring Rick Astley on April 22, the gigs were “regretfully” pushed back to April 29 and 30 with the venue citing technical issues. The shows were then postponed a second time, with Kay now scheduled to perform on May 23 and 24. The comedian reacted by telling fans of his disappointed, sharing: “I know I can’t believe it either.”My apologies once again but unfortunately the Co-op Live still isn’t ready and so, as yet, remains untested for a large-scale audience.

The O.C. almost looked very different!
It’s an indie grab bag and a fun one this weekend with the widely pummeled TIFF-premiering Poolman, (the people will decide), Jamie Foxx in comedy Not Another Church Movie, and Eric Bana’s Force of Nature: The Dry 2 sequel. Mubi and Strand Releasing are testing the market with limited openings Gasoline Rainbow and A Prince. A24 begins a slow rollout of I Saw The TV Glow.
Selena Kuznikov Andy Serkis is joining the cast of Oren Moverman’s World War II psychological thriller “The Man With the Miraculous Hands” starring Woody Harrelson. Vendôme’s Philippe Rousselet and Jerico Films’ Eric Jehelmann will produce while Vendôme’s Fabrice Gianfermi and Jeremy Plager serve as executive producers.
With many starring roles, including the “Star Trek” and “Wonder Woman” franchises, Chris Pine is obviously leading man material. But the actor recently went behind the camera for his directorial debut, “Poolman,” a comedy-mystery that he co-wrote and stars in alongside Annette Bening, DeWanda Wise, Ariana DeBose, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Danny DeVito, and more.
Chris Pine is opening up about the negative reviews his movie Poolman received.
Chris Pine is looking as cozy as possible while rolling in to the El Capitan Entertainment Centre to film an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday (May 9) in Hollywood, Calif.
Zack Sharf Digital News Director Chris Pine earned some of the worst reviews of his career for “Poolman,” a Los Angeles-set comedy mystery in the vein of “Chinatown” that Pine directed, co-wrote and starred in. The movie is Pine’s feature directorial debut, but it got eviscerated by critics when it premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Variety critic Owen Gleiberman called it an “absurdist disaster,” for instance.
Zack Sharf Digital News Director Chris Pine was taken by surprise when news hit that Steve Yockey, creator of the Max series “The Flight Attendant,” had signed on to write the script for “Star Trek 4.” Why? “I thought there was already a script,” the actor recently told Business Insider during an interview on his “Poolman” press tour. Pine’s not wrong, as a potential “Star Trek 4” has gone through multiple iterations in the years since the 2016 release of “Star Trek Beyond.” Pine took on the role of Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 franchise reboot “Star Trek,” and reprised the character in 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness” and 2016’s “Beyond.” Variety exclusively reported in March that Paramount Pictures remained committed to making a fourth “Star Trek” film to be headlined by Pine and his co-stars.
When James Gunn announced the ambitious DC Studios film slate that he and co-CEO Peter Safran were working on, people were largely not shocked to find out it was more of a full reboot. A new Superman, a new Batman, etc… For fans and people who keep up with superhero film universes, this made sense.
