Alex plants a tree in Perth to honour her father of the famous Cairncross family firm

A much-loved and prominent former Perth businessman has been remembered on what would have been his 100th birthday.
Alex Cairncross, Deputy Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross, daughter of the late Alastair Cairncross, planted an oak tree on the North Inch to create a lasting legacy to her father.
She has already received many messages of support from friends with fond memories of her dad. Many agree how very fitting this tribute is to a special man, fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Alastair and his brother, Jimmie, grew up in Gannochy and often took the ferry across the river, onto the North Inch to attend school in Rose Terrace.
Alex’s mother told her they found that much more fun as young boys rather than using the bridge.
The well-known Perth brothers were famous throughout the world for designing and making jewellery set with Scottish River Pearls. It is therefore very fitting that Alastair’s tree is planted overlooking the River Tay, in his home town.
Alex is leading The Queen’s Green Canopy within Perth and Kinross – a tree planting initiative as part of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, which invites the nation to “plant a tree for the jubilee”.
She has been working very closely with the Greenspace team at Perth and Kinross Council and to whom she is most grateful for their help and support.
“There has been a lot of local interest to plant trees to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee from individuals to schools and youth organisations as well as Rotary Clubs, churches, businesses and other organisations,” she explained.
“We have seen some multi-generational projects where children partner with adult groups and it is such experiences which create life-long memories for the children.”
