With vaccines getting distributed pretty damn fast in the US, we’re starting to see some cities begin to recover and make plans for in-person events in the summer and fall. In the world of film festivals, it appears that the first event to really attempt a full in-person experience is going to be this year’s Tribeca.

Walmart Drive-in experience will bring movie nights to 160 Walmart Supercenter locations across 26 states. Of the 320 showings, 94 will be hosted in Texas.The movie lineup is subject to change, but currently includes nine flicks like recent blockbusters “Black Panther,” “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse” and “Wonder Woman,” early 2000s hits “Friday Night Lights” and “Spy Kids,” and vintage classics “Space Jam,” “E.T.

Alice Wu’s film “The Half of It” was set to debut at the Tribeca Film Festival. It had a prime spot on opening weekend and it was good to go for a theatrical release but then COVID-19 happened. Like all festivals, it was canceled, but Wu just rolled with the punches.

No stranger to the festival, Lee’s documentary short, “Live Fast, Draw Yung,” about a seven-year-old rap portrait artist and his relationship with his father, premiered at TriBeCa in 2015.

While Lulu Wang’s emotional family drama “The Farewell” may have broken through last year, and upcoming comic book adaptations “Birds of Prey” (by Cathy Yan) and “The Eternals” (from Chloé Zhao) spell fresh opportunities for filmmakers of Chinese descent in 2020, a rollicking little follow-the-money caper called “Lucky Grandma” from first-time feature director Sasie Sealy and co-writer Angela Cheng proves there are plenty more emerging Chinese American talents just waiting for their shot.
