Joseph Kosinski was in talks to direct, but he has since exited the project, and the individual adds that the studio is currently meeting with other directors in the hopes the film can begin shooting by this spring. Deadline in a report on Monday listed candidates such as “Free Solo” directors Jimmy Chin & Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi as well as Laika’s Travis Knight, though one of the names floated in the report, “10 Cloverfield Lane” filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg, on Twitter denied being involved in making a sequel.

Since the 2009 release of “Coraline,” Laika has made a name for itself as a legitimate alternative to Pixar for animated feature films. All of their titles, including “ParaNorman,” “The Boxtrolls,” and “Kubu And The Two Strings” are critical darlings.

Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Andi Mack‘s Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Jemaine Clement, Maya Erskine, Tantoo Cardinal, Tom Waits and Richard E. Grant make up the voice cast for Wildwood, the latest movie from Laika Studios.

Laika is teaming with the creator of “Ozark” to create a new stop-motion animated feature described as a “gritty neo-noir folktale.” Bill Dubuque, who created the Netflix series “Ozark,” wrote the original screenplay for “The Night Gardener,” which will be directed by Laika’s CEO and President Travis Knight, who previously helmed the Laika feature “Kubo and the Two Strings.”Described as a gritty folktale, the new film follows a young man in rural Missouri fighting to keep his family together in the wake of a tragedy. The film will paint an unflinching portrait of sacrifice, self-reliance and revenge, per an official description.“’The Night Gardener’ is a beautiful and timeless story that quickens the pulse as often as it breaks the heart,” said Knight in a statement.

Michael Bay has regrets.

Zack Sharf Michael Bay’s career is defined in part by his blockbuster “Transformers” movies, but the filmmaker recently admitted to Unilad UK (via IndieWire) that he should’ve stopped making them at a certain point. Bay directed 2007’s “Transformers,” which grossed $709 million worldwide, and then returned for four sequels. Two follow-up films, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” and “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” grossed over $1 billion worldwide.

Just like the SXSW world premiere of The Lost City was a homecoming for Sandra Bullock who lives here down in Austin, it marked a return for brothers Adam and Aaron Nee who jumpstarted their filmmaking careers at cinephile fest with the 2006 movie The Last Romantic.

The announcement was made Wednesday by Travis Knight, President & CEO of the award-winning animation studio, who will direct the film.

Production is underway now at the Laika facility outside Portland, Oregon.

Back in 2019, everything was lining up for filmmaker Travis Knight to catapult from his “Bumblebee” success to tackle the long-awaited film adaptation of the “Uncharted” video game franchise. But as happened quite a few times with that film, “Uncharted” was delayed and Knight had to depart the project.

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix and 21 Laps are teaming up for the Vampire action thriller Uprising, an adaption of Raymond Villareal the book A People’s History of the Vampire Uprising with Travis Knight on board to direct. Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen are producing for 21 Laps as part of their overall deal with Netflix. Jeremy Slater penned the latest draft, with previous drafts by Jay Basu and JD Payne & Patrick McKay.

The new installment will be part of an ongoing revamp of the Paramount blockbuster series that began in 2018 with the spinoff “Bumblebee,” a more character-focused film based on one of the Autobots that starred Hailee Steinfeld and was directed by “Kubo and the Two Strings” filmmaker Travis Knight.

After five films from Michael Bay and one from Travis Knight, featuring leads like Shia LaBeouf, Mark Wahlberg, and Hailee Steinfeld, it’s clear that the “Transformers” universe could use some, uh, diversity. Well, we’ve already seen Paramount and Hasbro take the first steps with hiring filmmakers Steven Caple, Jr.

Laika is expanding into the world of live-action filmmaking for the first time, with an adaptation of John Brownlow’s upcoming debut novel, Seventeen.
