Aaron Neuwirth In “Don’t Breathe 2,” now playing in theaters, Stephen Lang returns as the blind man and former Navy SEAL Norman Nordstrom, who is harboring a terrible secret about his wicked ways.
Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic“Don’t Breathe 2,” in which Stephen Lang once again portrays a furious blind Gulf War veteran who fends off a handful of intruders in brutal makeshift ways, is a worthy enough sequel to “Don’t Breathe” — and yes, that’s about half a compliment.
In the long history of utterly unnecessary horror sequels, a special place must be carved out for “Don’t Breathe 2.” The 2016 original was a nasty but serviceable home invasion thriller, directed with a modicum of skill by Fede Alvarez. However, if horror sequels (like comedy sequels) are plagued with the inherent difficulty of replicating the element of surprise so essential to their genre, a “Don’t Breathe” follow-up is in particular peril.
We are still more than a year away from the release of “Avatar 2” (December 2022), but it’s no secret that James Cameron isn’t stopping with just one sequel, as he has been in deep production/development on a total of four more films in the franchise. And apparently, one of the “Avatar” leads has read the script for the final “Avatar” film (the fifth total) and instantly became emotional.
There’s been a lot of discussion about the upcoming “Don’t Breathe 2.” Not only is it the sequel to the surprising horror/thriller about thieves who unexpectedly find themselves robbing a blind man that is really just a heartless murderer, but the new installment in the franchise flips the script and makes that heartless murderer the hero. But as the new “Dark AF” red band trailer for “Don’t Breathe 2” is any indication, it definitely could be difficult to root for the hero of the film.
Jane Levy is speaking out in response to Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez‘s claims about why she did not return for the sequel.
Don’t Breathe 2, the sequel to the 2016 horror film, has been released.Unveiled by IGN, the clip features an introduction by first-time director Rodo Sayagues and producer Fede Álvarez, who directed the first film and 2013’s Evil Dead.In Don’t Breathe 2, Norman Nordstrom aka The Blind Man (played by Stephen Lang) settles into the role of a guardian for an 11-year-old girl (Madelyn Grace).
Don’t Breathe was released in 2016 and it showcased a terrifying story of a few strangers breaking into a house meeting a blind man played by Stephen Lang and things unravel mysteriously in the night. The film was an instant success with the audience and raked in the moolah at the box office as well.
Though there are a million horror films, there are seemingly a much smaller number of actual unique stories to tell in the genre, especially when it comes to sequels. Typically, if a horror film becomes popular, the sequel decides to basically mimic the first film to replicate that success.
The Justin P. Lange-directed exorcism horror pic The Seventh Day possessed the specialty box office this weekend.
