The overwhelming thought as the credits roll of Sean Durkin’s The Iron Claw is why on Earth is it not a serious awards contender? Featuring a career best performance from Zac Efron, The Iron Claw expertly and sensitively explores one of the wrestling world’s most tragic families – the Von Erichs. Based upon the real life story of Kevin Von Erich (Efron) and his brothers, The Iron Claw recounts their shared passion for wrestling, and the consequences that brought. The men in the family believed that they were the victims of a family curse. Whilst initially that sounds silly, as events unfold, it is easy to see how they began to believe this.

Stuart Miller Sean Durkin doesn’t typically think about actors while writing a screenplay, but while he was working on “The Iron Claw,” his movie about the tragedy-riddled pro wrestling Von Erich family, he checked out the David Fincher series “Mindhunter.” “When I saw Holt I thought immediately, ‘I want this guy,’” Durkin recalls of Holt McCallany, who plays the domineering patriarch, Fritz Von Erich, whose signature move from his time in the ring was the Iron Claw, and who oversees a brood of four sons each of whom follows him into the wrestling ring. “If I didn’t get Fritz right the whole movie would fall apart and Holt had the presence and an intensity we needed.” McCallany knows fighting, but a very different sport: he played boxing trainer Teddy Atlas in “Tyson,” appeared in “Fight Club” and starred as a heavyweight champion in the FX series “Lights Out.” He even did some amateur fighting.
For Zac Efron, A24‘s The Iron Claw was the most challenging project in a career of more than two decades, but “in the best ways possible.”

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Holt McCallany is the quintessential “that guy” actor, with more than 80 film and TV credits to his name. Now he’s stepping into the spotlight as the legendary wrestling family patriarch Fritz Von Erich in Sean Durkin’s harrowing sports drama “The Iron Claw.” McCallany’s first acting attempt came at 14, after he ran away from his New York home and headed to Hollywood with no contacts or strategy. He wound up working at a screwdriver factory in Gardena before his parents — Tony Award-winning producer Michael McAloney and actress and singer Julie Wilson — tracked him down and shipped him to a boarding school in Ireland.
Michaela Zee “The Iron Claw” revolves around the Von Erich family, a dynasty of professional wrestlers who made history in the intensely competitive sport in the early 1980s. Based on a true story, the A24 drama features Von Erich brothers Kevin (Zac Efron), David (Harris Dickinson), Kerry (Jeremy Allen White) and Mike (Stanley Simons). One brother, however, was omitted from the film altogether: Chris Von Erich.
Marc Malkin Senior Editor, Culture and Events Jeremy Allen White may co-star with Zac Efron in Sean Durkin’s new wrestling drama “The Iron Claw,” but the Emmy-winning “The Bear” actor has something to admit — he has never watched a “High School Musical” movie. “I haven’t seen them,” White says on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. “Sorry, Zac.
Jaden Thompson Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White turned heads this year when fans noticed they packed on pounds of muscle for their A24 wrestling drama “The Iron Claw,” which is based on the lives of the Von Erich brothers. Efron, Allen and the rest of the cast put in serious work to look the part for the film — but once they gained that muscle, how did they perfect those wrestling moves? Chavo Guerrero, Jr., former pro wrestler and stunt coordinator on “The Iron Claw,” speaks with Variety to unpack the actors’ intensive training process. After communicating with director Sean Durkin about his vision for the film, Guerrero began by acquainting the actors with the wrestling ring and the fundamentals of the sport.
Watching “The Iron Claw” can feel like getting slammed with a metal folding chair over and over again. So bludgeoning are the true and tragic circumstances that befell the famous Von Erich wresting family during the 1980s and 90s, which director Sean Durkin’s film depicts.Running time: 130 minutes. Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic Gladiators, pain freaks, brutes, clowns, true athletes, fake competitors: The slab-of-meat stars of professional wrestling are all those things. And back in the 1980s, when wrestling was reaching its cultural zenith, it almost looked as if you could divide the world between those who took wrestling on the level and those who dismissed it as a vulgar, over-the-top bad joke.
Considering the foothold it has in American pop culture, it’s somewhat surprising that there have been so few movies about pro wrestling. In fact, over the last 15 years, the only real notable narrative films on the subject are Darren Aronofsky’s 2008 drama “The Wrestler” and the solid, but already forgotten 2018 dramedy “Fighting With My Family.” The last 12 months have been something of a sea change, comparably, with Roger Ross Williams’ superb “Cassandro” about famed exótico lucha libre wrestler Saúl Armendáriz and now, Sean Durkin’s “The Iron Claw,” a spotlight on the Von Erichs, one of the most respected and snakebit families in the sport.

While 2023 is coming to a close, one of the last major (largely) unseen and still super anticipated movies of the year is “The Iron Claw.” From filmmaker Sean Durkin, known for “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” the U.K. TV drama “Southcliffe,” and “The Nest,” his latest is a wrestling drama about the Von Erich Brothers.
Marc Malkin Senior Film Awards, Events & Lifestyle Editor Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White and Harris Dickson didn’t know each other well before shooting their new drama “The Iron Claw.” But then came their first wardrobe fitting and camera tests. “Our bodies had to be completely shaved,” White told me at a reception for the film at NeueHouse Hollywood on Monday in Los Angeles. “We were strangers at the time.
Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Could A24 wrestle another Oscar contender into the mix while already having two strong candidates with “Past Lives” and “The Zone of Interest”? At the beginning of “The Iron Claw,” the narrator says the Von Erich family is cursed. Towards the latter half of the film, when the supposed curse has reared its ugly head, a man sitting directly in front of me with a woman begins to weep physically and audibly intensely. The woman grabbed his head to comfort him, but it was proving too much for the gentleman, who grabbed his crutches and walked out of the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
