Australian Bureau Of Statistics Admits 2021 Census’ Non-Binary Sex Option Was A Failure

The Australian Bureau Of Statistics has said that it will evaluate how information on sex was collected for the 2021 Census and make recommendations to the government before the 2026 Census. This follows an admission that its analysis of data revealed that the addition of the non-binary option for the sex question in the 2021 Census had failed to yield any meaningful data. National LGBTQI advocacy group Equality Australia said that the analysis released by the ABS “proves that changes are needed in order for LGBTIQ+ people to be properly counted in the Census.”The ABS has guidelines about how to ask questions for collecting information about sex, gender, variations of sex characteristics and sexual orientation. The Standard recommends four separate questions – sex recorded at birth, gender, variations of sex characteristics and sexual orientation. Despite calls from LGBTQI advocacy groups to include questions on sexual orientation and gender identity, the then Scott Morrison government determined that these questions would not be included in the 2021 Census. Scott Morrison“The topics in the Census are determined by Government and the Parliament.

Election Retrospective: We Must Remain Focused

By Nicky BathI found myself on Larrakia land, Darwin, on election night, initially with a small group of colleagues glued to the TV in a hotel bar and then later with the remaining delegates of the Australian Professional Association for Trans Health (AusPATH)* 2022 conference where we watched Scott Morrison concede. When I think about the post-election landscape, I think about buses.  The blue Liberal bus can now go in for a full service and maybe a respray. The repaint, I hope, will demonstrate reflection on how the Liberal party can be inclusive of LGBTIQ+ people and communities and see us as part of the solution in reducing health and wellbeing disparities, rather than the problem. LGBTIQ+ Health Australia (LHA) was at times welcomed onboard the blue bus, and I am grateful to Greg Hunt, Minister for Health and Aged Care, who demonstrated commitment and understanding of LGBTIQ+ people.

Why Katherine Deves Should Be Sacked

This is why Scott Morrison – who did not support marriage equality, calls us gender whisperers, equivocates on conversion therapy, and dragged us through hell with the Religious Discrimination Bill – is so in love with the TERF campaign around women’s sports. There are no sporting associations that have raised any issue with trans participation in sports, and such a ban would do nothing to resolve the issues that advocates of women’s sport discuss like equal pay and media attention. And yet we are presented with this macabre joke of a bill.We are also presented with a joke of a candidate.
