Zack Sharf Digital News Director Saoirse Ronan revealed last September to People magazine that she tried and failed to film a cameo in the upcoming “Barbie” movie, which is directed by her “Lady Bird” and “Little Women” filmmaker Greta Gerwig. It turns out Gerwig eyed even more “Barbie” cameos, including one that would’ve reunited her and Ronan with Timothée Chalamet. The Oscar nominee also appeared in “Lady Bird” and “Little Women.” “Well, it was always going to have to be like a sort of smaller thing because she was actually producing at the time, which I am so proud of her for,” Gerwig said of having to scrap Ronan’s cameo. “And of course, it’s brilliant. But it was going to be a specialty cameo. I was also going to do a specialty cameo with Timmy, and both of them couldn’t do it, and I was so annoyed. But I love them so much. But it felt like doing something without my children. I mean, I’m not their mom, but I sort of feel like their mom.”

Comedy doesn’t always have the easiest time being taken seriously come Oscar season. Movies based on established toy brands don’t either. But, based on reaction to Sunday night’s huge world premiere at the Shrine in Downtown Los Angeles, as well as my own feelings watching it with the packed (6000+) crowd of first nighters, Barbie just may have the stuff to not only become a smash boxoffice hit this summer (I would now guarantee it) but also a surprising genuine awards contender for Warner Bros and Mattel (I can’t believe I just wrote that sentence).

Greta Gerwig gave a shoutout to the writers amid the WGA strike during the Barbie premiere in LA at the Shrine Auditorium. Ahead of the screening, the director of the film also noted that her co-writer Noah Baumbach was not present in support of the guild.

The Shrine Auditorum, located smack in the middle of the USC campus, was hosed down in colors of blush and bashful for the anticipated Warner Bros. release (as in, the security guards wore pink polo shirts), which drew the film’s stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.  One notable absence was Noah Baumbach, the film’s co-writer and Gerwig’s partner. “My co-writer and co-creator, my partner in love and art, Noah Baumbach is not here. He is passionately supporting the fight of the Writers Guild of America,” Gerwig said. “He is a Barbie girl. Nothing in ‘Barbie’ happened without him, and nothing in Hollywood happens without writers.”

Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Dua Lipa and more actors also play Barbie in the Warner Bros. tentpole.

As he caught up with Variety at Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” premiere in Hollywood on Tuesday night, Ben-Adir recalled seeing Ryan Gosling and the rest of the Ken dolls for the first time in full costume. “We all looked like absolute losers in a funny way,” he shared, adding, “It was hilarious.” He went on to say that joining the film was a no-brainer after reading Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s script. “From the first page, I was like, ‘Wow, this is really, really funny!'” Ben-Adir said. “I just heard such great things about Ryan and Margot. Then me and Greta went out for some whiskey. We spoke for two or three hours. There was a really strong sense from early on like she was trying to do something a little bit different.

Back in 2016, Sony Pictures had the rights to “Barbie” and cast Schumer to star in a movie based on an original idea and screenplay by Hilary Winston. Schumer and her sister, Kim Caramele, planned rewrites, but the comedian exited the movie less than a year later. “Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts,” the actor said in a statement to Variety at the time. “The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”

Sure, everyone is eagerly waiting to see what Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig have up their sleeves when they release the new “Barbie” film in July. While Baumbach just co-wrote the film alongside Gerwig, who also directed, there’s still just a curiosity surrounding the film, especially as it shares a release date with Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” But that’s neither here nor there.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Ryan Gosling revealed to Vogue that Margot Robbie helped him get into character on the “Barbie” set by leaving him a gift each day of filming. “It would be very un-Ken of me to talk about Ken,” Gosling said when asked about his process of getting into character. The only thing he would reveal were the presents Robbie left him. “She left a pink present with a pink bow, from Barbie to Ken, every day while we were filming,” Gosling said. “They were all beach-related. Like puka shells, or a sign that says ‘Pray for surf.’ Because Ken’s job is just beach. I’ve never quite figured out what that means. But I felt like she was trying to help Ken understand, through these gifts that she was giving.”

A lot of people can’t wait to see Margot Robbie in “Barbie” this summer, but the actress knows there’s also a lot of people who aren’t fans of the doll and the brand that comes with it.

In a recent interview with BAFTA (via IndieWire), Robbie revealed that her first reaction to reading Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s “Barbie” screenplay was disbelief over the movie being made. “The first time I read the ‘Barbie’ script, my reaction was, ‘Ah! This is so good. What a shame it will never see the light of day because they are never going to let us make this movie,’” Robbie said. “But they did.”

Dua Lipa stars as mermaid Barbie, for instance, alongside many other actors as different iterations of the famous doll. The first “Barbie” trailer — featuring a nod to Stanley Kubrik’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” — officially introduced the world to Robbie’s Barbie, but it didn’t reveal too much about the characters or storyline. Since then it has been revealed that Barbie and Ken have been placed in the real world and forced to wrestle with the difficulties of no longer being just dolls.
