EXCLUSIVE: Screenwriter, executive producer and showrunner Monica Macer is getting into business with MGM Television with a multi-year, exclusive, overall deal. Under the pact, Macer will create, develop and produce original scripted programming for the television studio.
In addition to the Forest Whitaker-starring series, Epix is also behind the epic romantic adventure “Billy the Kid,” sci-fi horror “From”, historical limited drama series “Belgravia” and upcoming “Rogue Heroes.” MGM+ will continue to be available in the U.S. on Prime Video, cable, telco, satellite and digital distribution services.“MGM is one of the most iconic and beloved brands from the golden age of entertainment,” Michael Wright, head of MGM+, said in a statement.

Starting Jan. 15, 2023, the MGM-owned pay cable network and streaming outlet will take its parent company’s name and be known as MGM+. The rebrand comes following Amazon’s $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM in March. ‘We have felt for some time that this is the best service that many people have never heard of,” says Michael Wright, who has been president of Epix since 2017 and will now serve as head of MGM+. “Other than individual shows, the service has never been marketed. Now you have this incredibly powerful, loud name that means something to people. You could spend five years and $100 million trying to launch a new brand, and you wouldn’t have the brand equity that you get with MGM. It’s really something of a gift.”

Epix has renewed the contemporary sci-fi horror series From, headlined by Harold Perrineau, for a 10-episode second season. Created/executive produced by John Griffin and exec produced by Lost alums Jack Bender and Jeff Pinkner, the series unravels the mystery of a nightmarish town that traps all those who enter. Production will commence this summer in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with an expected air date in 2023.
Epix has ordered an eight-episode second season of historical drama Domina. The renewal follows a deal between Epix and global distributor Banijay Rights for a second season of the drama produced by Tiger Aspect, in association with Epix Studios.
