EXCLUSIVE: Asante Blackk (When They See Us) and Luis Guzmán (Traffic) have been tapped as the leads for Aristotle Torres’ feature directorial debut Story Ave, for FirstGen Content (Catch the Fair One, Call Jane) and Jamie Foxx’s Foxxhole Productions. The film, which has wrapped production in New York, will also star Alex Hibbert (Moonlight), Melvin Gregg (Nine Perfect Strangers), Cassandra Freeman (Monsters and Men) and Coral Peña (For All Mankind).

The group are then forced to play the game in order to save their lives.“Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realise this ain’t no motherfucking game,” the synopsis reads.“The Blackening skewers genre tropes and poses the sardonic question: If the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first?”The film, which is now showing in UK cinemas, stars Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg, X Mayo, Dewayne Perkins, Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, Jay Pharoah and Yvonne Orji.The Blackening’s soundtrack features a number of classic tracks, covers and contemporary R&B.

Hulu has officially renewed “Nine Perfect Strangers” for a second season.Nicole Kidman will return as star and executive producer, along with a new cast nearing deals to join in the Swiss Alps-set installment that includes “White Lotus” star Murray Bartlett, Liv Ullman, Dolly de Leon, Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Aras Aydin. Kidman stars as Masha, the lead counselor at Tranquillum House, who has her own traumatic past involving a dead daughter.

Hulu is proceeding with the long-rumored second season of Nine Perfect Strangers. Nicole Kidman is returning to executive producer and star, with a new group of the titular strangers around her. Two-time Oscar nominee Liv Ullman, Emmy winner Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus The Last Of Us), Dolly de Leon (Triangles Of Sadness), Maisie Richardson-Sellers (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) and Turkish actor Aras Aydin are set to star opposite Kidman, sources tell Deadline, with casting of the remaining roles ongoing.

The Blackening is a potent blend of comedy, and thrills that parodies and challenges the genre’s tropes, specifically those around a mostly Black cast. Under the direction of Tim Story and script by Tracey Oliver, it pays homage to some iconic horror franchises like Scream, Friday the 13th, and Saw with a bit of Cabin In The Woods sprinkled in for some extra razzle dazzle. In the midst of the chaotic hijinks, the narrative centers Black American culture and all of its complexities. The film stars Jermaine Fowler, Antoinette Robertson, Dewayne Perkins, Sinqa Walls, Grace Byers, X Mayo, Melvin Gregg, with Yvonne Orji, and Jay Pharoah. 

Kino Lorber has acquired North American rights to the indie drama Story Ave, starring Asante Blackk (This Is Us) and Luis Guzmán (Wednesday) — which we were first to report on — slating it for release in theaters in October, with a on digital and home video debut to follow.

The actor with a grizzled countenance and a world-weary voice appears to have tapped into those memories for drama “Story Ave.” The actor brings an anchoring warmth to his portrayal of the MTA conductor who is held up by the unsure and anguished, but also infuriating, protagonist in Aristotle Torres’ affecting debut feature (co-written with Bonsu Thompson). Asante Blackk — of “This Is Us” and “When They See Us” — is Kadir, a high-schooler and aspiring artist whose younger brother has just died. A post-funeral reception makes clear that he and his mother (along with her boyfriend) are not a comfort to each other in this time of grief. Kadir is bedeviled by vivid nightmares that seem to damn him for not having done something to save his brother, who had cerebral palsy. His notebook brims with sketches of his beloved younger sibling.

Why? Is a question that I ask myself when I watch reboots and remakes of older films. Whether I like them or not I always ask why.  Why was this rebooted? Why was it remade?And then I look for any details about the film that help it stand on its own. I found no answers to those questions while watching Calmatic’s House Party reboot.

Jones and Tamala Jones will also reprise their roles as Slim and Tanya respectively in the show.The film’s original director and writer, Rick Famuyiwa, will return to direct and executive produce the pilot.
