IDLES play secret ‘Brutalism’ set at Glastonbury 2022

IDLES played a surprise set at Glastonbury 2022 today (Saturday June 25), performing their debut album ‘Brutalism’ in full.Taking to the stage in the 12.30pm slot on the BBC Introducing Stage, the Bristol band tore through the entirety of their 2017 debut, described at the time by NME as “an expletive-laden, punk triumph that tackles the current Tory rule, toxic masculinity and mental health.”They were introduced onstage by radio legend Steve Lamacq, who labelled them “one of the most Incendiary, caring and thought-provoking bands of the last decade”. The group paid him back in kind with a dedication ahead of ‘Well Done’, before breaking into an impromptu verse of Green Day’s ‘Basket Case’.During ‘Exeter’,  a young fan named Daisy was pulled out of the crowd to play guitar.

IDLES have revealed which song in their back catalogue is the one they now feel is like “a bad haircut”, explaining why they never play it live.The Bristol band, who released their fifth studio album ‘Tangk’ earlier this year, were talking to The Independent while reflecting on their earlier, angrier years.Frontman Joe Talbot and guitarist Mark Bowen talked about how they once believed in the beauty of violence in their lyrics, and how they now believe them to not be “the words of a healthy man”.“I was scared and lost and angry,” Talbot added.When Bowen interjected that, “at least it was honest”, Talbot agreed: “I never lie – well apart from ‘Great’ on ‘Joy As An Act Of Resistance’. That song is like a bad haircut, which is why we don’t play it.

IDLES have released the official video for ‘Grace’, an AI recreation of Coldplay’s iconic ‘Yellow’ video, but with Chris Martin singing the words to this song instead.The video sees Martin strolling down the same beach that he walked along for his own 2000 song, as night turns to day inside four minutes.IDLES frontman Joe Talbot says the concept to use the Coldplay imagery for ‘Grace’ came to him in a dream, and he contacted Martin directly to ask for his permission. Through a mix of flashbacks and present day, the show depicts how the athletes transitioned from an elite team into a savage clan. The second season picks up two months after Shauna disregarded Jackie with bad results. The tensions have grown within the team with winter conditions intensifying, leaving the girls to make impossible decisions to survive.
