A French soccer commercial went viral ahead of the 2023 Women’s World Cup for pointing out gender biases in the sport.

French football supporters may be a little down in the dumps today, but France’s leading broadcaster TF1 certainly has something to celebrate. The World Cup final that saw Argentina defeat Les Bleus on Sunday afternoon has set a new all-time record for viewership in France with an average of 24.1 million watching from the 4pm local hour. 

The semi-final World Cup match between France and Morocco on Wednesday night was watched by an average 20.7 million viewers on TF1 from 8pm French time. This is the network’s biggest audience since 2016, and is also the best for any program on any French channel in those six years.

With another winning performance at the World Cup, this time defeating Poland in the round of 16, the French national football team also led broadcaster TF1 to yet another ratings record for the year. An average 14.3 million viewers tuned in to see Les Bleus notch a 3-1 victory on Sunday, from the 4pm hour local time. This is the best score for all channels across 2022 and since July 2021. The audience share was 68.9%.

France’s 2-1 victory in the World Cup group stage over Denmark on Saturday evening drew an average 11.6 million viewers to TF1 from the 5PM hour local time. This is second best audience score of the year for all programs and across all channels in the Hexagon. Upon entering the tournament last week,  Les Bleus set a record for viewership in 2022, and since June 2021.

Despite being plagued by injuries that knocked out some key players in past weeks, France entered the World Cup with a bang on Tuesday — and scored a ratings victory for TF1 at the same time. At home, an average 12.53 million viewers tuned in from 8 PM local time to watch Les Bleus defeat Australia’s Socceroos 4-1.

French broadcasters TF1 and M6 have each set new three-year ratings highs in the market over the past two weeks of Euro 2020 play as locals were glued to matches involving World Cup champions — and presumed Euro favorites — France. While figures are likely to soften now that Les Bleus have been knocked out of the tournament, TF1 again on Monday night scored the biggest audience for any program on a single network since 2018’s World Cup final.

France’s 2-2 draw with Portugal on Wednesday evening at Budapest’s Puskas Arena set another three-year audience record in France with TF1 registering an average 15.6M viewers (58 share) from 9PM local. That’s the biggest number of viewers for a single channel in the market since TF1 nabbed 19.3M during the 2018 World Cup final. It also tops the June 15 Euro 2020 opener for Les Bleus which had scored 15.1M viewers on M6.
