‘Frustrated’ Meghan McCain bashes Bradley Cooper’s ‘Maestro’: ‘I could barely get through it’

took to X (formerly Twitter) to bash the Leonard Bernstein biopic on Wednesday. She first slammed the movie’s “Oscar buzz,” writing: “Watched ‘Maestro’ last night and I could barely get through it.”The conservative political commentator continued: “I’m frustrated I wasted what little free time I have open at night (with 2 young kids) watching it.”“Why are so many Oscar buzz movies like this and so disappointing? Who are these movies for?” she wondered. While the Oscar nominations have yet to be announced, “Maestro” has earned numerous nods so far at the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards. The drama follows the rise of the famed composer (Cooper) and the relationship with his wife, Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). The “A Star is Born” actor, 48, also wrote and directed the project, and even prepared for six years to master the “six minutes of music” to recreate Bernstein’s 1976 performance of Gustav Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony. Some X users agreed with McCain’s stance, with someone noting that the movie was “dull” and he “didn’t get through it.”“My wife and I started it but turned it off 15 mins in when it became clear this was meant as an ‘artistic movie’ for the Hollywood Elite.

‘Maestro’ of love: Read Bradley Cooper’s high school opinion about best friends hooking up

Bradley Cooper was writing the script on besties becoming boos. The Cooper Opinion — in a 1993 column titled “When best friends cross the line” — was published in the “Fresh Ink” teen section of the Philadelphia Daily News when the actor was a high school senior at Germantown Academy in the Philly suburbs of Fort Washington, Pennsylvania.I know this because I was the young editor, barely out of college myself, who helped Cooper find his pen game when he was a lovesick lacrosse player.“Can best friends who are of the opposite sex hook up with each other without destroying their friendship?” he wrote. Then — with an appropriate paragraphic pause for dramatic effect — he added, “In my case, yes … so far.”As if he was already ready to write his own personal “When Harry Met Sally” about his relationship plot twist with his senior prom date Deborah Landes, Cooper got real about how “suddenly you start to hate that guy she always told you was hot” and about how “once college hits, our relationship will definitely return to a ‘best friendship.’”Long before Cooper, 48, started working his baby blues on the the leading lady likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Lady Gaga and, currently, Carey Mulligan — in “Maestro” his Leonard Bernstein biopic that began streaming on Netflix this week — the baby heartthrob was already in his romantic feelings.“There has always been an underlying attraction between the two of us,” he wrote. But then he continued to get into the conflicted heart of it all: “Before, we could never fathom the idea of being more than just friends, especially because she was involved in a relationship with a friend of mine.

Bradley Cooper’s ‘Maestro’ Explores The Powerful Bond Between Musical Genius Leonard Bernstein And His Wife Felicia: “This Had To Be A Story About Their Relationship”

Leonard Bernstein — the composer of West Side Story and considered one of the world’s greatest conductors — has lived rent-free in Bradley Cooper’s head since 2018, when Steven Spielberg met with him about what was going to be a straightforward biopic of a musical genius. Somehow, Spielberg knew that Cooper had been obsessed with conducting since he was a child. Not because he was some kind of musical prodigy, but because of an episode of The Bugs Bunny Show in which the hero conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, arms flailing wildly.

‘Maestro’: Why Bradley Cooper Opted Not to Have an Original Score

Jon Burlingame The greatest film score of 2023 isn’t eligible for an Academy Award. That’s because Leonard Bernstein composed it between 1944 and 1977, multiple pieces that collectively form the musical backdrop of “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper’s film about the 20th century American composer-conductor. The classical excerpts functioning as dramatic score include Bernstein’s ballets “Fancy Free” and “Facsimile,” parts of his Broadway scores for “West Side Story” and “Candide,” his opera “A Quiet Place,” music for the film “On the Waterfront,” portions of his second and third symphonies as well as his “Mass” and “Chichester Psalms.” “I think of the score as the co-star of the film,” says the composer’s oldest daughter, Jamie Bernstein.

Bradley Cooper Offered Howard Stern a Major ‘Star Is Born’ Role, Wants an Eagles Super Bowl Victory Over ‘Maestro’ Oscar Wins: ‘I’m Sick. I’m Not Lying’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Bradley Cooper‘s “Maestro” publicity tour landed him on “The Howard Stern Show,” where the eponymous radio show host asked him a nail-biting question: “Sophie’s choice for 2024: You win the Oscar, not only for best director but also best actor, and Carey Mulligan wins best actress, or the Eagles have a Super Bowl victory?” “Eagles Super Bowl victory,” Cooper answered without hesitation as Stern appeared shocked and called him out for lying. “Eagles! Eagles! I’m sick. I’m not lying.” Cooper is obviously a diehard fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, a team that played a prominent role in his 2012 comedy-drama “Silver Linings Playbook.” The Eagles lost the 2023 Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs, no doubt a heartbreaker for Cooper.

‘Maestro’ review: Dir. Bradley Cooper (2023)

The life of Leonard Bernstein would be a daunting prospect for any filmmaker with the ambition to commit to screen. The larger-than-life American composer and conductor was a man with a deservedly renowned talent, who put his fame to good use through humanitarian work in between conducting great masterworks and composing his very own for orchestras, stage and screen. He lived large and loved many, and to condense all his life, his triumphs, his relationships and his complexities is no easy feat. Martin Scorsese considered it, as did Steven Spielberg, but both ultimately passed, all the while staying on as producers for the final piece, which has come courtesy of director and star Bradley Cooper.
