Mattel’s live-action “Master of the Universe” film, based on the He-Man toy, has been in development hell for years, changing studios three times in five years. Sony had distribution rights for years (even had a March 5, 2021 film on the calendar at one point), with Noah Centineo in the lead.

Amazon MGM Studios is eyeing a live-action Masters of the Universe film, based on the popular ’80s toys from Mattel, Deadline can confirm. While in very early talks, the project would come over to the streamer from Netflix, where it fell apart over the summer.

The supernatural whodunnit is expected to open between $13 million and $15 million, which would land it between the franchise’s previous two entries, “Murder on the Orient Express” from 2017 and last year’s “Death on the Nile.” All three movies are based on Agatha Christie’s murder mystery novels, with the first “Murder on the Orient Express” standing as the most successful with a $28.6 million opening.

Insiders said that close to $30 million has already been spent on development costs and the cash that’s been shelled out to hold on to talent – like previously announced lead Kyle Allen and the film’s heatseeking directing duo Adam and Aaron Nee (“The Lost City”). Other knowledgable sources estimate all-in costs for development at twice that figure. The latest headaches for He-Man and friends only further complicates the property’s torturous journey to the screen, one that goes as far back as 2007. It’s a long road that’s crossed through two other studios, Warner Bros. and Sony Pictures, and countless writers and directors like Jon M. Chu and McG. The latest implosion at Netflix, according to five individuals with knowledge of the project, was over budget concerns.

Set in post-WWII Venice on All Hallows’ Eve, the film follows another mystery featuring the celebrated sleuth Poirot. Inspired by Christie’s “Hallowe’en Party,” the now retired and living in self-imposed exile Poirot reluctantly attends a séance at a haunted palazzo when one of the guests is murdered, and the former detective must once again find out who did it.

Carson Burton Zac Efron is heading to Vietnam in the first trailer for “The Greatest Beer Run Ever.”Apple TV+ dropped the trailer for its upcoming true-life war comedy starring Efron, Russell Crowe and Bill Murray. The film, which is based on a true story, follows Efron as John “Chickie” Donohue. Set in 1967, Donohue leaves New York to track down his army friends in Vietnam and share a few beers with them to show that they have support from the American people.

Toronto in the hopes that this true story can inspire audiences the way Farrelly’s last film did. Farrelly co-wrote the script with Brian Currie and Pete Jones based on the book “The Greatest Beer Run Ever: A Memoir of Friendship, Loyalty and War” by Joanna Molloy and the real John “Chickie” Donohue, whose book was a New York Times best seller in 2020.
