Also part of a trend, both are based on IP from established auspices and big-name talent already attached — Robert and Michelle King’s Elsbeth starring Carrie Preston, a police procedural spinoff from the Kings’ The Good Wife/Good Fight universe, and Matlock, a gender swap reboot of the classic legal drama starring Kathy Bates, from Jennie Snyder Urman and Eric Christian Olsen.

Mandy Moore would like to stop this train. The actress — who has lined up two TV roles since saying goodbye to Rebecca Pearson — is still processing the end of This Is Us.

It’s pilot season in July! The lasting impact of the pandemic on the traditional broadcast pilot cycle continues to be felt as production and pickup decisions on a sizable number of broadcast pilots has shifted off-cycle. ABC and NBC have five and six off-cycle pilots this year, respectively, while CBS has a decision to make on a project with a pilot production commitment, and Fox is eying more script-to-series orders. As usual, information is scarce and not always reliable early on but here is what I am hearing about various pilots. Keep in mind that not all projects are on the same timetable so if they are not mentioned, that could mean that there is not enough feedback on them yet. I hear NBC is ahead of ABC in the pilot evaluation process and may start making pickup decisions as early as this week. The networks have a little bit more time as most pilot cast options are believed to expire at the end of August.

The final episode of This Is Us is set to air tonight and we have discovered the salary information for the cast.

By Before my first introduction to the cast of This Is Us (all the way back on Monday, July 25, 2016 for a special screening and cocktail party), I had already episode three times. This was nearly two months , but I remember telling anyone and everyone who would listen—my colleagues, my parents, my friends—that this was going to be a hit show. It wasn’t just the twist at the end of the first episode (to this day, one of the best surprises in a television series), but more so that it was filling a much-needed hole in the TV landscape for a compelling family dramedy. Parenthood had ended 18 months earlier, and streaming services weren't as robust as we see now.

This Is Us this week, and while we always knew this time would come, it still feels too soon. Season six might be its strongest yet, which is saying something considering they've all been pretty damn exceptional, so it's even more sad knowing that we won't have Tuesday nights to spend with the Pearsons anymore.
