‘Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams’ Review: Luca Guadagnino Lovingly Lionizes Ferragamo

th-century immigration, youthful ambition, the dawn of Hollywood, passionate artistic hunger, tenacity, foot fascination and wild innovation. Thus Guadagnino’s carefully and lovingly detailed history lesson, free of stylistic flourishes, is as satisfying and methodical as that red shoe–making. This early nod to “The Wizard of Oz” is appropriate, too, as Ferragamo’s trajectory encompasses both the groundbreaking, rainbow-patterned, cork-heeled platform sandal he designed in 1938, reportedly for Judy Garland herself, and a teenage uprooting that not so faintly resembles that of the fictional Dorothy Gale, the smalltown girl dropped into an alien Technicolor environment.Born in 1898 to a farm family of 14 children in the village of Bonito, Italy, Ferragamo was fascinated by the neighborhood cobbler and spent hours watching and learning until, as a nine-year-old, he made his first shoes for his sisters’ Communion.

Was Angela Lansbury a grande dame? No, she was warmer and friendlier than that

Dame Edith Sitwell, the poet, who back in the 1950s, at the height of her grandness, would intimidate her enemies by regarding them through a pair of lorgnettes. These days, it’s a term generally reserved for elderly female actors – hearty, salty, imperious. Americans can do it, of course – Elaine Stritch, so very great, so very grand – but may struggle to ascend to the highest reaches of haughtiness achieved by a Dame Maggie Smith or a Dame Edith Evans.

Angela Lansbury Appreciation: This Titan of Stage, Film and TV Moved Generations of Fans

th century and a decent chunk of the 21st, Angela Lansbury did it all — drama, comedy, musical, stage, screen, warm, terrifying — and she did it brilliantly.Born in London in 1925, she fled the Blitz in 1940 and came to New York to study acting. By 1942, she’d signed with MGM in Los Angeles and immediately appeared in three films that remain classics to this day: “Gaslight” and “The Picture of Dorian Gray” (both of which earned her Oscar nominations) as well as “National Velvet.” She was anything but sweetness and light during her years at the studio, playing the yin to Judy Garland’s sweet yang in “The Harvey Girls” as well as the unfaithful Queen Anne in “The Three Musketeers” (1948), but she ultimately felt disappointed in the roles offered her and dissolved her contract in 1952.The rest of the decade involved having children, doing some stage and TV work, as well as roles in a smattering of films, the most memorable being “The Court Jester,” “The Long Hot Summer” and “The Reluctant Debutante.” But Lansbury’s screen career burned hot anew in the 1960s, since her level of poise and intensity made her a favorite for filmmakers who cast her as characters older than she was.

Angela Lansbury, Beloved Actress and 'Murder, She Wrote' Star, Dead at 96

.Perhaps best known for her TV role as everyone's favorite detective on, the London-born Lansbury was as legendary as she was lovable — so much so that she scored a perfect 100 on 's ultra-scientific «lovability index» in the mid-1990s.The daughter of an actress and a wealthy politician, a pre-teen Lansbury, buried between the arts and politics, took to acting as a method of coping with her father's untimely death, which she described as «the defining moment» of her life. Upon moving to the United States while World War II was still raging, Lansbury was quickly contracted by MGM, where she appeared in her first film (, 1944), earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the young age of 19.While Lansbury landed her second Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win just a year later for her role as a working-class music hall singer in, she was often quick to dismiss her years with MGM, who frequently miscast her in older, somewhat villainous roles alongside the likes of Ingrid Bergman, Elizabeth Taylor and Judy Garland.«I was always playing somebody else, a different kind of woman than I was myself,» she told of her time with the media conglomerate. «I regret terribly the years that I wasted playing a bunch of women who weren’t me at all.»It was during this time the British character actress met her second and longtime husband, Peter Shaw, shortly after ending a brief marriage to Richard Cromwell (Lansbury later found out Cromwell was gay).

Meghan Markle was 'very unhappy' over her 2017 Vanity Fair cover and found the headline 'racist': report

Meghan Markle became infuriated over her 2017 Vanity Fair cover, which ran with a headline that she deemed "racist," according to "Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown," a new book by royal author Valentine Low. Markle and Prince Harry reportedly objected to the October issue's headline "She's Just Wild About Harry!" as they pointed out that "I'm Just Wild About Harry" was the title of song that Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney performed as a blackface number in the 1939 musical "Babes In Arms" "They [Harry and Meghan] tried to get it changed online, because [they thought] it had been racially motivated," said a source, according to an excerpt from Low's book that was obtained by the Daily Mail.

Venice Review: Niccolo Falsetti’s ‘Margins’

“Hey kids, let’s put on a show!” Mickey Rooney’s habitual clarion call to Judy Garland, the starting gun for so many toe-tapping, feel-good Saturday afternoon musicals when both were child stars in the 1930s, has bounced down the years and spread across continents, because who does not love a jolly film about kids putting on a show?

Sidney Poitier and Judy Garland Featured in New Six-Story Hollywood Mural

Lily Moayeri About six weeks ago, locals and visitors to the famed intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street saw one of the bare walls in the area begin to show some shapes and colors. Over on Instagram, posing at the same spot, Los Angeles urban pop artist Tristan Eaton wrote on July 17, “My dream wall is finally happening!” On Aug. 25, the six-story mural, which adorns the south-facing side of the Aster club and hotel, had its official reveal in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The mural was created with spray paint and executed in Eaton’s signature collage style, which mixes pop art and traditional techniques. It’s a salute to Hollywood groundbreakers such as Judy Garland and Sidney Poitier, whose likenesses are the largest figurative elements of the work. Garland’s daughter, Lorna Luft, and granddaughter, Vanessa Richards, were among the guests who attended the ribbon-cutting.
