Joe Otterson TV Reporter Mel Brooks came up with the title to his 1981 comedy feature “History of the World, Part I” as a joke. There were never any plans to make a Part II.  Until now.   As the streaming revolution took hold, Brooks, his producing partner Kevin Salter and rightsholder Searchlight Pictures decided to explore a long overdue sequel, but in series form. That’s when they contacted Nick Kroll, who’s known for his sketch comedy (in addition to the painfully funny take on adolescence “Big Mouth”), to kick around a “Part II” that was four decades not in the making.  

Amber Dowling It took 42 years, but Mel Brooks is finally making good on a parody of a promise he never seemed likely to keep: Bringing “History of the World, Part II” to audiences far and wide. The filmmaker addresses that elephant in the room within the opening minutes of the new, eight-part Hulu series, admitting that he agreed to the project under two conditions — that there could be no repeat gags, and that he be made to look exactly like he did in the 1981 original film. The show winks at both of those conditions by the end of the first episode, setting the tone for any unaware viewers that were expecting historical insight or veracity on world events.

But sometimes it’s nearly as good to be part of a legacy project initiated four decades ago by indisputable Hollywood comedy royalty — in this case, legendary writer, director, producer and performer Mel Brooks’ “The History of the World, Part 2.” That was the prevailing spirit among the all-star assembly of contemporary comedy stars who turned out for the premiere of Hulu’s long-awaited follow-up to Brooks’ 1981 comedy classic “The History of the World, Part I,” the bulk of whom appear in the irreverent, sketch-style series and worship at the altar of the signature uproarious style of its creator, who – at age 96 – also serves as executive producer, narrator and overall guiding light.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter “Maximum Truth,” a political mockumentary starring Ike Barinholtz and Dylan O’Brien, has sold domestic rights to Momentum Pictures. The distribution company is aiming to release the film in theaters and online in the fall. David Stassen directed “Maximum Truth,” which tells the story of a documentary crew following political grifter Rick Klingman as he teams up with a fellow “operative” named Simon to take down a rival congressional candidate. “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” star Kiernan Shipka and “What We Do in the Shadows” actor Mark Proksch also appear in the film. “The on-screen comedic chemistry between Ike and Dylan is nothing short of hilarious, and we are excited to partner with them to bring this film to audiences nationwide,” said Ian Goggins, Momentum’s executive VP of global home entertainment.

Hulu is offering up a first look of History of the World, Part II, the sequel to the seminal Mel Brooks film History of the World: Part I from 1981. It will premiere this spring.

Season 3 of Apple TV+’s animated comedy Central Park will premiere Sept. 9. It will feature original cast member Kristen Bell who is rejoining the series as a new character, Abby, Paige’s (Katherine Hahn) little sister. (first-look image above)

EXCLUSIVE: Kiernan Shipka and Nico Hiraga are set to star New Line and Picturestart’s Sweethearts with Dollface creator Jordan Weiss on board to direct. The film will be produced by Picturestart for New Line Cinema and is currently in production. Weiss also co-wrote the script with Dan Brier. Pascal — whose sensitive, goofy performance is a surprise — gives an emotional speech about how he and his father were brought together by “Guarding Tess.” Hilarious.

Tiffany Haddish-fronted murder mystery comedy The Afterparty will be back for a second case.

Selome Hailu The mystery continues.Apple TV Plus announced that “The Afterparty” has been renewed for a second season. Tiffany Haddish is confirmed to return in the role of Detective Danner.The series, which hails from Chris Miller and Phil Lord, is a comedic murder mystery where each episode is told in a different genre and from a different character’s perspective. For example, Episode 1 is styled like a romantic comedy, as it follows the narrative of escape room designer Aniq (Sam Richardson), whose primary goal is to reconnect to his high school crush Zoë (Zoë Chao).

Amy Poehler gets sandwiched in by a few of her famous friends at the premiere of Lucy and Desi held at the Directors Guild of America on Tuesday night (February 15) in Los Angeles.

Barinholtz, 42, who played Marcus White, the sophomoric, dim-bulb warehouse supervisor on the sitcom, created by Justin Spitzer (it ended its run last March). “Justin approached me about a show he was going to take out for pilot season — this was 2019 — and without even reading the script I knew it was going to be amazing.”That series was “American Auto” and Barinholtz snared a co-starring role, but COVID shut production down in 2020 just as shooting was about to begin.

On with the television!“The Afterparty”Friday, January 28, Apple TV+Apple’s latest buzzy series is co-written and directed by “21 Jump Street” filmmaker Christopher Miller (his creative partner-in-crime, Phil Lord, is a producer), someone who has gotten very good at upending expectations. (Consider: “The LEGO Movie,” “21 Jump Street” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”) “The Afterparty” takes place at (duh) an afterparty following a high school reunion, where a bunch of friends (and potential enemies) gather after an awkward evening reliving the past.

What do you need to know about “The Afterparty?” Well, it’s almost “Knives Out” as brought to you by Phil Lord and Chris Miller with a stellar cast that includes Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, Zoë Chao, Ben Schwartz, Ike Barinholtz, Ilana Glazer, Jamie Demetriou, and Dave Franco.
