If you don’t know the super popular manga property, “Naruto,” you probably at least have seen the running meme about racing as fast as you can to something you love (someone did the run in real life during the Area 51 raid and it made the news, lol). That’s probably exactly how fans of the Japanese manga/graphic novel feel about the latest news.

Katcy Stephan Lionsgate has closed a deal with “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” director Destin Daniel Cretton to write and direct a live-action film adaptation of the manga classic “Naruto.” The announcement was made today by Adam Fogelson, chair, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. The movie will be based on the manga created by Masashi Kishimoto.

The series is adapted from cartoonist Gene Luen Yang’s acclaimed 2006 graphic novel, which tells the story of Jin Wang (Ben Wang), a child of Chinese immigrants who’s struggling with growing up in a predominantly white suburb. When he meets a new Taiwanese classmate, the two become fast friends, but Jin is pulled into the battles of Chinese mythological gods.

Last year, as the industry was looking to lift itself out the pandemic’s purgatory at the box office, SXSW lit the wick on A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, which wound up dynamiting the 18-34 hipster moviegoer set in what became the highest-grossing indie film of 2022, the best ever for the New York-based distributor, and now a potential Oscar Best Picture winner.

Marvel Studios is now entering Phase 5 as “Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania” is set to be the first installment of the new Phase and will give us a better look at the new big-bad, Kang The Conqueror, played by rising star Jonathan Majors (“Creed III“). Kang is expected to give our MCU heroes a real struggle as they’re not only dealing with one incarnation but a wave of variants.

The Sundance Institute has today named the jurors who will preside over awards for the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. The 16-person lineup features everyone from CODA star Marlee Matlin to We Need To Talk About Cosby‘s W.
