After premiering her latest filmThe Last Thing He Wanted at Sundance, Dee Rees has chosen her next project: a remake ofGeorge Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess.Rees will write and direct the musical, which follows Porgy, a disabled black street beggar living in the slums of Charleston, as he attempts to rescue Bess from a violent love and drug dealer.Gershwin's opera is an adaption of Dorothy and DuBose Heyward's play Porgy, which is itself an adaptation of the Heywards' 1925 novel.

I watch a lot of movies and usually like when the story is "one step ahead of me." But The Last Thing He Wanted, a Netflix film that made its debut at Sundance, is disorienting, phony, and impossible to follow, and makes for two very uncomfortable hours.

After “Pariah” and “Mudbound,” director Dee Rees returns to the Sundance Film Festival with her next feature, “The Last Thing He Wanted,” a political thriller based on a 1996 Joan Didion novel. The adapted screenplay follows a reporter named Elena McMahon (Anne Hathaway) and her photojournalist friend (Rosie Perez) as they chase a complicated story off the coast of Costa Rica.

Carey Mulligan has made a conscious decision in recent years to collaborate with female directors, from Sarah Gavron (“Suffragette”) to Dee Rees (“Mudbound”). On Saturday night at the Sundance Film Festival, she’ll unveil “Promising Young Woman,” a thriller written and directed by Emerald Fennell, about a heroine out for revenge after experiencing a traumatic abuse.
