Romance and cannibalism might seem like an unlikely pairing, but that’s exactly why Bones and All screenwriter David Kajganich thought that only director Luca Guadagnino could do justice to his script, which he adapted from Camille DeAngelis’ 2015 novel. 

“I didn’t read the script as a horror script,” says Oscar nominated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino about his 1980s-set cannibal love story, Bones and All.

We edited the movie and we almost actually don’t use any of her double. She’s so good.” The film, which Guadagnino described as a “sexy comedy,” follows Zendaya’s character as a love triangle develops while coaches her player-husband (“West Side Story” actor Mike Faist) for his big match against her ex and his childhood best friend, played by Josh O’Connor (“The Crown”).

Marta Balaga Luca Guadagnino couldn’t escape the Armie Hammer question at the Zurich Film Festival, where he was celebrated with the “A Tribute To…” award. “David Kajganich and Theresa Park, the writer and one of our producers, have been working on ‘Bones and All’ since the book was released. Many years ago, probably around the time when we were shooting ‘Call Me by Your Name’,” he said during his masterclass when asked about the recent “cannibal” scandal. “It was to be directed by my great colleague Antonio Campos, but he decided not to go for it. That’s when they gave me the script. Any correlation with this kind of innuendo and silliness is preposterous.”

But despite the uncomfortable subject matter, the audience at the Venice premiere for the movie devoured “Bones & All.” The film received a 8.5-minute standing ovation, the longest and most enthusiastic of the festival so far. (It handily beat the previous record holder “Tar,” a drama starring Cate Blanchett as a tortured composer.)

To be young today…I can’t imagine what it is to grow up without the onslaught of social media,” he said. “And at least here [in ‘Bones’] there are characters wrestling with internal blood lines vis-a-vis [struggling with] growing up with Instagram or Twitter; trying to figure out where they fit in with that.”
