Elisabeth Moss Says “‘Top Of The Lake’ Has More To Say” & Wants To Reunite With Jane Campion For Season 3

When one thinks of auteur-driven Peak TV in the streaming age, the first shows that generally come to mind are “House Of Cards” (2013) with David Fincher at the helm (at least for the first few eps), “True Detective” (2014) by director Cary Fukunaga, and Steven Soderbergh’s “The Knick” (2014). Crucial to the mix, but sometimes missing in that conversation, is Jane Campion’s “Top Of The Lake” starring Elisabeth Moss, which debuted in 2013, right at the beginning of this new second golden age of TV.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Angelina Jolie‘s scrapped “Cleopatra” movie was part romance epic and part “political thriller with assassinations and sex,” according to the movie’s original screenwriter Brian Helgeland. The Oscar-winning actor was set to play the Egyptian queen in a tentpole for Sony Pictures that once courted director David Fincher to helm. It never got off the ground.

Brian Helgeland Shares Details On David Fincher’s Unmade ‘Cleopatra’ Film Almost Starring Angelina Jolie

“Dune” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has a lot of options for what he could make next, and one of them could be his long-gestating “Cleopatra” movie based on the Stacy Schiff novel “Cleopatra: A Life” for Sony Pictures (he has a couple of options, one of them being a third “Dune” movie too). Before that, however, some may remember the era when filmmaker David Fincher had a version of the movie set up at Paramount, circa 2012, that would have starred Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie  (long before the competing Gal Gadot incarnation with Patty Jenkins and Kari Skogland).

‘Se7en’: David Fincher Talks The Thorny Shoot Of His Sophomore Feature: ‘Oh, My God, This Is That Problem Child From The ‘Alien’ Movies?’

At this point in his career, David Fincher is a Mount Rushmore figurehead of contemporary American cinema for a lot of moviegoers. But that wasn’t always the case. Flashback to the early ’90s, when Fincher, in his mid-20s and primarily a director of commercials, was tapped by 20th Century Fox to helm the much-anticipated sequel “Alien 3.”  The result was disastrous: a $60 million budget blockbuster with a troubled production that scored low with critics and failed to live up to anyone’s lofty expectations.

How Holt McCallany Hit the Gym and Learned to Wrestle for His Role as ‘Iron Claw’s’ Von Erich Patriarch

Stuart Miller Sean Durkin doesn’t typically think about actors while writing a screenplay, but while he was working on “The Iron Claw,” his movie about the tragedy-riddled pro wrestling Von Erich family, he checked out the David Fincher series “Mindhunter.” “When I saw Holt I thought immediately, ‘I want this guy,’” Durkin recalls of Holt McCallany, who plays the domineering patriarch, Fritz Von Erich, whose signature move from his time in the ring was the Iron Claw, and who oversees a brood of four sons each of whom follows him into the wrestling ring. “If I didn’t get Fritz right the whole movie would fall apart and Holt had the presence and an intensity we needed.” McCallany knows fighting, but a very different sport: he played boxing trainer Teddy Atlas in “Tyson,” appeared in “Fight Club” and starred as a heavyweight champion in the FX series “Lights Out.” He even did some amateur fighting.

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Holt McCallany is the quintessential “that guy” actor, with more than 80 film and TV credits to his name. Now he’s stepping into the spotlight as the legendary wrestling family patriarch Fritz Von Erich in Sean Durkin’s harrowing sports drama “The Iron Claw.” McCallany’s first acting attempt came at 14, after he ran away from his New York home and headed to Hollywood with no contacts or strategy. He wound up working at a screwdriver factory in Gardena before his parents — Tony Award-winning producer Michael McAloney and actress and singer Julie Wilson — tracked him down and shipped him to a boarding school in Ireland.

How Kerry O’Malley Delivered an Unforgettable Turn as a Secretary With Secrets in David Fincher’s ‘The Killer’

Matt Donnelly Senior Film Writer SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers for David Fincher’s “The Killer,” now streaming on Netflix. The next few months will be stacked with conversations about the year’s best film performances, but we’d be remiss to let 2023 go dark without mentioning one of its most exciting turns: Kerry O’Malley in David Fincher’s “The Killer.” A veteran working actress who has appeared on “1923,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and in features like the “Annabelle” franchise, O’Malley more than held her own alongside Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton in the unexpectedly funny tale of a contract killer gone haywire. O’Malley stars as Dolores, an average-seeming New Orleans woman who serves as dutiful assistant to a lawyer (Charles Parnell), who also happens to dole out high-paid hit orders on the rich and powerful.

It doesn’t feel as if they’re concerned about upsetting Fincher, but instead, they can’t help but discuss just how difficult it is to work within his framework.
