Naman Ramachandran The British Film Institute (BFI) has kicked off its U.K.

Naman Ramachandran Celebrated British filmmaker Clio Barnard, a previous Cannes winner for “The Selfish Giant” (2013), is back on the Croisette with Directors’ Fortnight selection “Ali & Ava.”The film is a love story based on people Barnard got to know through making her previous films.

Following the COVID-19-driven cancelation last year, the Cannes’ the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar section returns in full force. Organizer Paolo Moretti and his selection committee have unveiled the official selection for the 53rd edition of the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, and it’s full of great picks and several women filmmakers (Cannes only has four films by female filmmakers playing in competition).

Frank Dillane (Fear the Walking Dead, The Girlfriend Experience), Hayley Squires (Adult Material, I, Daniel Blake), Clémence Poésy (Tenet, Genius) and Jamael Westman (Anne Boleyn, Animals), are set as leads opposite Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston in the Apple TV+ drama series The Essex Serpent, adapted from Sarah Perry’s bestselling novel of the same name.

It looks like Keira Knightley is sticking to TV series for a little bit. After the actress was already confirmed for a new Hulu miniseries from the creator of “The L Word,” it appears that Knightley has found yet another show she would like to star in, this time for Apple TV+.

Naman Ramachandran Keira Knightley (“Misbehaviour”) will star in and executive produce series “The Essex Serpent,” directed by acclaimed filmmaker Clio Barnard (“The Selfish Giant”).The series is an adaptation of Sarah Perry’s bestselling novel that won book of the year at the British Book Awards in 2016. It will follow a newly widowed woman, played by Knightley, who, having being released from an abusive marriage, relocates from Victorian London to a small village in the county of Essex.

Principal photography has wrapped on “Ali & Ava,” the fourth feature from writer-director Clio Barnard (“Dark River,” “The Selfish Giant”), starring Adeel Akhtar (“Four Lions”) and Claire Rushbrook (“Secrets & Lies”).
