SPOILER ALERT: This story contains details from Disney/Marvel’s Eternals.
A new Marvel movie is upon us – and the drama is high! “Eternals,” the third film in Marvel’s Phase Four and 26th (!!!) overall, releases today and it’s already causing a good amount of debate between critics and fans alike. Is this another Marvel hit? Is this Marvel’s first big miss? On this episode of The Playlist Podcast, host Mike DeAngelo is joined by Jeff Zhang of Strange Harbors to talk about those very questions and so much more.
Ok folks, a Marvel Studios film has been released. Yes, it’s only been a matter of hours since the first non-press audiences saw “Eternals” on opening night, but you know the deal—spoilers are out there and even director Chloe Zhao is talking about one of the biggest surprises in one of the post-credits scenes.
It’s the worst reviewed Marvel entry so far. “Nomadland” Oscar winner Chloé Zhao’s movie holds a mere 53 percent on RottenTomatoes. In my review for The Post, I gave it one star.

Last week, “Eternals” filmmaker Chloe Zhao talked about how she was hoping Disney and Marvel Studios would fight back against censoring her film when it debuts overseas. And it appears the studio is holding firm and will not censor the film, despite losing revenue along the way.
Clayton Davis “Eternals,” the newest entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, comes from the Oscars’ reigning best director Chloé Zhao, but has been met with tepid reception from critics. Ahead of its release in theaters on Friday, the film is currently sitting at 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest score for an MCU film, which is baffling considering it’s sitting under “Thor: The Dark World” (2013) and “Iron Man 2” (2010).

It’s happened. For the first time in 26 films, Marvel Studios has released a feature that isn’t a Rotten Tomatoes darling, as “Eternals” has achieved a dubious distinction of being officially “rotten.” In a world where studios try (and often fail miserably) to find critical success with their big blockbusters, Marvel Studios has spent more than a decade defying the odds.

winning the Best Director Oscar for “Nomadland,” Chloé Zhao has upchucked one of the MCU’s worst movies in ages. And to what end? “Eternals,” which will no doubt become a Jon Favreau punchline in a future “Avengers” film, need not exist in a universe that already counts the Fantastic Four and X-Men among its franchises.Yet, here you go, ticket buyers — another far worse, uniformed collective of super-beings with conspicuously similar powers and a vague, grandiose mission to save humanity.
With “Eternals” mere days away from arriving in theaters around the world, a lot of talk has been about the fact that the film includes Marvel Studios’ first real inclusion of a major LGBTQ superhero. And though the character is a major part of the new “Eternals,” that doesn’t mean the film won’t face heavy censoring for approval in certain conservative international markets.

The broad and common critique of Marvel movies, generally, is that they are often anonymously made, cookie-cutter in shape, and—if created by an indie auteur—set up in a way that generally strips that filmmaker of their voice or any discerning identity. In some regards, Chloé Zhao’s “Eternals” seems engineered as an exact rejoinder to this criticism.
