Up until recently, most of the people deemed worthy of drawn-out biographical explorations have been white, but it's a new day in Hollywood. In theaters, films like Hidden Figures (2016) and Harriet (2019) brought stories about lesser-known African American heroes from out of the shadows, and with Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker, Netflix does the holy work of making the self-made millionaire the TV star she should have been long before now.

Last year, the director Kasi Lemmons did something interesting, if not consistently successful, with the character of Harriet Tubman: She turned her into a modern action hero. Lemmons’s film “Harriet” had the beats and the posture towards its audience of a thrill-ride multiplex feature, but set in the 19th-century South instead of the present day and starring Cynthia Erivo instead of, say, Liam Neeson.

Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker, which finds Octavia Spencer stepping into the shoes of the barrier-breaking, self-made millionaire who revolutionized black hair care. The four-part limited series brings to light the incredible story of Walker, the daughter of freed slaves who rose from a clothing washer job to become one of the richest women in the country at the time of her death in 1919.

Mark your calendars because Octavia Spencer's turn as cultural icon and hair care entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker will arrive on Netflix soon. On Thursday, the streaming service announced that the limited series is officially titled Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker and will debut on Friday, March 20. Netflix also revealed the first photos of Spencer as the eponymous trailblazer, which you can check out below.
