Manori Ravindran International EditorIn another major M&A coup, Fremantle has taken a majority stake in Irish production company Element Pictures, the producers of “Normal People,” “Conversations With Friends” and “The Favourite.”Element Pictures has grown to become one of Europe’s top drama producers, and is managed by co-founders Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe, with offices in Dublin, London and Belfast.The deal was spearheaded by Fremantle group COO and continental Europe CEO Andrea Scrosati and Lorenzo De Maio, of De Maio Entertainment. The deal represents continued investment in European drama from Fremantle, which is owned by Germany’s RTL Group.

In another mega M&A deal, Fremantle has taken a majority stake in Irish The Favourite, Room and Conversations with Friends producer Element Pictures.

Lily-Rose Depp (“The Idol”), “Squid Game” breakout Hoyeon and Renate Reinsve (“The Worst Person in the World”) are set to star in Joe Talbot’s sophomore feature “The Governesses” for A24, the company announced on Wednesday.The script is by Talbot and poet/novelist Olivia Gatwood (“Life of the Party”) based on Anne Serre’s novel of the same name. The film marks Talbot’s second film with A24 after his feature debut “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.”“The Governesses” follows three rebellious governesses who upend the household they work in  –– inspiriting the minds of the boys in their care, igniting the imaginations of the bohemian couple who employ them and abandoning their charges for erotic adventures.

Wilson Chapman editorFans of Sally Rooney’s debut novel “Conversations With Friends” won’t be disappointed with the steamy trailer for the BBC/Hulu series adaptation.The series, which premieres on BBC Three and Hulu in May, follows Frances (Alison Oliver), a vulnerable college student living in Dublin who is best friends with her ex-girlfriend Bobbi (Sasha Lane). At a spoken word poetry event, the two meet Melissa (Jemima Kirke), a writer, and her husband Nick (Joe Alwyn), an actor.

Ten years ago, on a drizzly Thursday evening during the much-loved Galway Film Fleadh, Element Pictures’ Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe were standing outside of the Eyre Square Hotel when Guiney received an email with the initial pre-booking numbers for their upcoming title The Guard. The figures were, thankfully, “through the roof” and it marked a key turning point for the Irish production, distribution and (soon to be) exhibition outfit.
