Jason Aldean is speaking out.
Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic CMT has confirmed that, after initially airing Jason Aldean’s highly controversial music video for “Try That in a Small Town,” the network pulled the contentious clip from the air on Monday, even before the furor over the tune grew greater on Tuesday. A CMT spokesperson had no further comment on the video being yanked. Reps for Aldean’s label, BBR Music Group, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Billboard was first to report the video being removed by the network. Meanwhile, Aldean took to his social media Tuesday afternoon to defend the song from its many critics, taking a much softer tone in his messaging than he does in the hostile single itself, or a video that projects images of demonstrators onto a courthouse that was the site of a famous lynching.

Jason Aldean is responding to criticism over his song, «Try That in a Small Town,» after some found the lyrics to be pro-gun and the imagery in the music video to be offensive. A portion of the lyrics in the track includes, «Got a gun that my granddad gave me / They say one day they're gonna round up / Well, that s**t might fly in the city, good luck / Try that in a small town / See how far ya make it down the road / You cross that line, it won't take long / For you to find out, I recommend you don't / Try that in a small town.» The music video, which was released four days ago, was filmed in front of the massive American flag displayed on the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee — the site of the 1927 lynching of Henry Choate. The music video is interlaced with clips of protestors vandalizing cities in the wake of police brutality and racial unrest during the height of the pandemic. Aldean also sings that «good ol' boys, raised up right,» taking matters into their own hands by «taking care of our own.»The country singer took to social media on Tuesday, saying, «In the past 24 hours I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song (a song that has been out since May) and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests. These references are not only meritless, but dangerous.
Jason Aldean has evidently decided to go all-in on disgusting right-wing grievance politics…
Jason Aldean is getting some backlash for his new controversial track, «Try That in a Small Town,» which some critics describe as tone-deaf and divisive.Just days after he ran off stage in Hartford, Connecticut, after what he said was the result of heat exhaustion, the 46-year-old country singer is sparking backlash over the pro-gun lyrics to his new track, as well as the images depicted in the song's music video. Some of his more incendiary lyrics include, «Got a gun that my granddad gave me / They say one day they're gonna round up / Well, that s**t might fly in the city, good luck / Try that in a small town / See how far ya make it down the road / You cross that line, it won't take long / For you to find out, I recommend you don't / Try that in a small town.» Aldean further stoked the flames with the music video, whose backdrop included an American flag displayed on the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee — the site of the 1927 lynching of Henry Choate. Some of the more inflammatory images used in the music video included interlacing clips of protestors vandalizing cities in the wake of police brutality and racial unrest during the height of the pandemic.
