Sandra Hüller on Breaking a No-Holocaust-Movie Rule for ‘Zone of Interest,’ and Whether Her ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ Character is Guilty

Jenelle Riley Deputy Awards and Features Editor Sandra Hüller finds herself at the center of two of the most talked-about movies of the year: The German actor gets to show her range (and her facility with languages) in both Jonathan Glazer’s drama “The Zone of Interest” and Justine Triet’s legal thriller “Anatomy of a Fall.” Both premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where “Anatomy” won the Palme d’Or and “Zone” was awarded the runner-up Grand Prix prize. Now, with both films busy on the circuit, Huller stopped by Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast to discuss the passionate responses the very different films are getting. Listen below: For most Americans, Hüller burst onto the scene with the 2016 comedy-drama “Toni Erdmann,” which was nominated for the Oscar for best foreign language film.

Sandra Hüller, Star Of ‘Anatomy Of A Fall’ And ‘The Zone Of Interest’, Explains Why Praise Makes Her Uncomfortable: “Acting Is A Collective Experience”

On Sandra Hüller’s wall is the first piece of art she ever owned: a photograph she bought from a shop in Munich. “I won’t say its name,” she says archly, “because that would be advertising.” It’s a dynamic, joyous image showing the ensemble cast of Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring as staged by Pina Bausch, the German choreographer famous for saying, “Dance, dance, otherwise we are lost.” “I just love it,” Hüller says admiringly, turning her head for another look. “These people are all making the same movement, as you can see. But everybody is doing it completely differently. They have the same task, but you can see each personality in the way they’re doing it. I love it so much. It’s like they’re almost flying.” It explains a lot about Hüller and her craft.

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Justine Triet‘s “Anatomy of a Fall” missed out on being chosen as France’s Oscar entry, but the movie has been a critical and commercial hit — including in the U.S., where it’s become the highest-grossing specialized foreign-language release post-pandemic, according to distributor Neon. Released in the States on Oct. 13, “Anatomy of a Fall” has pulled in $3.5 million so far, putting it ahead of Joachim Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World” and on track to match last year’s Palme d’Or winner “Triangle of Sadness,” another Neon movie.

‘Anatomy Of A Fall’ Director Justine Triet On Learning New Skills After Winning A Palme d’Or, Sparking A “Mini Revolution” For Women

Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall has given her an experience unlike any other she’s had over her 15-year career — one that includes winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. “I would say that the job I’ve been doing since May is a job that I had never done before. It’s a new craft entirely,” she says. Anatomy of a Fall, which she co-wrote with her partner Arthur Harari, eschews the traditional courtroom drama to explore familial relationships when an ambitious, sexually self-assured novelist, played by Sandra Hüller, is put on trial for the suspicious death of her husband Samuel at their home in the French Alps.

Sandra Tabet’s Horror Film ‘Rabies’ Explores the Apocalyptic Setting of 1990s Post-Civil War Beirut

Martin Dale Contributor The sight of dogs ravaging war-torn streets has become an all too familiar sight. Sandra Tabet’s debut feature film “Rabies” (Rage) – a development project at the Atlas Workshops – returns to early 1990s in Beirut, in the aftermath of the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), when rabies began to spread rapidly amongst ravenous dogs, leading to some parts of the city being overrun. Combining horror genre codes with a real-world setting, “Rabies” follows 60-year-old history teacher Julia, who tries to find a cure for her 30-year-old son Ghassan, who after being bitten by a rabid dog slowly transforms into a violent monster.

What to Watch the Week of November 5: Why The Golden Bachelor: The Women Tell All Is Must-See

The Golden Bachelor is worth watching, but I mean it, and this week especially so. This Thursday is the Women Tell All, and while I normally couldn't care less about the filler episode every season, this time it's the exception. reunite on stage, and my only complaint is that ABC didn't make the episode a full two hours (it's 74 minutes, but still).I was there in person for the taping (which lasted around four hours), and it was the most emotional, fulfilling, inspiring and hilarious afternoon/evening (and that was before Gerry even joined Jesse Palmer in the hot seat!).The women look amazing, but more than anything, you get to hear them talk about the experience and how it changed them in ways they could never have imagined.

‘Confederates’ Review: Slave Play

Confederates renders a frank, witty, and delightfully twisted exploration of racial biases, be they unconscious or firmly resolved. The play, directed by Stori Ayers in a riveting new production at Mosaic, derives some suspense from the anticipation that its parallel plotlines might connect. But whether or not the individual stories of embattled college professor Sandra (Nikkole Salter) and enslaved rebel Sara (Deidre Staples) actually meet, their experiences as Black women, though separated by centuries, are still intertwined.Even Nadir Bey’s evocative set design suggests as much, combining Sandra’s office and Sara’s plantation cabin within the same space.

The Golden Bachelor's Sandra Swears By These 3 Rules for Gorgeous Skin

on The Golden Bachelor (she was eliminated on the Thursday, October 26 episode), but she sure made the most of her time week after week.Whether it was the calming way she said “fuck,” or her decision to ignore the fact that she's lactose-intolerant to play Never Have I Ever, the 75-year-old retired executive assistant from Doraville, Georgia (and former ) made sure that would never forget her.And how could he? For goodness sake, she missed her daughter's wedding to compete in a pickleball championship on the show! Okay, that might be stretching it, but she did indeed skip the big day to stay on The Golden Bachelor. During her time alone with Gerry, she explained that her daughter said since she already found her guy, now it was time for her mother to find hers.Except given how much Gerry values family, he certainly would have understood if Sandra wanted to leave for 36 hours. Or more so, why didn't she pull a Nancy and in so many words say to Gerry that if he didn't see her at the end, now would be the time to send her home?“My kids would've been very angry with me had I done that,” she tells Glamour in response to those questions.
