Kevin Spacey Performs Shakespeare Monologue, Gets Standing Ovation at Oxford Lecture on ‘Cancel Culture’

Ellise Shafer Kevin Spacey made a surprise appearance at an Oxford lecture honoring late conservative philosopher Roger Scruton on Monday night, performing for the first time since he was acquitted of sexual assault charges in London. In a clip from the event titled “what Shakespeare can teach us about cancel culture,” The Spectator associate editor Douglas Murray invited Spacey on stage to perform a monologue from “Timon of Athens.” “In an era of cancellation and defenestration we sometimes forget that we cannot go on like this and that we have been here before. We know this because our greatest writers and artists have addressed this question in their own times,” Murray said, referencing when Scruton was briefly dismissed from a government commission in 2019 over offensive remarks he made in an interview with the New Statesman.

“Hollywood comeback.”The two-time Oscar-winning actor, 64, took to the stage for the first time since being acquitted of sexual assault charges in London in July. The “House of Cards” alum performed a monologue at the Sheldonian Theatre, an architectural jewel inside the heart of the University of Oxford, from the play “Timon of Athens” written by William Shakespeare in the early 1600s.Spacey was introduced to the audience by British author, political commentator and Post columnist Douglas Murray, who had just finished giving a lecture on the damaging effects of cancel culture in honor of the late Sir Roger Scruton, an English philosopher, writer and social critic who died in January 2020 at 75.Scruton, a government housing adviser, wrongly lost his job in 2019 after he appeared to repeat antisemitic statements and denied Islamophobia was a problem during a magazine interview with the New Statesman.“In an era of cancellation and defenestration, we sometimes forget that we both cannot go on like this and that we have been here before,” Murray said. “We know this because our greatest writers and artists have addressed this question in their own times.

Rarer still for a first-time filmmaker from Europe whose arty, offbeat debut — a poetic, surreal, soulful meditation on memory and grief — might have easily escaped the attention of Hollywood royalty. But “Apples,” by Greek director Christos Nikou, charmed audiences after its 2020 premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where Blanchett presided over the main competition jury.

The pair recently rekindled their romance, with photos of them looking loved-up emerging during their holiday, following months of rumours. And although they may have been in high spirits during their holiday, it seemed it may not have come to a perfect end as they reportedly found themselves grounded on the runway for hours before being able to jet back to the UK.

‘The Elephant 6 Recording Co.’ Review: Rock Doc Celebrates The Brief Life Of An Explosively Creative Indie Rock Collective

Author Douglas Coupland once wrote in his seminal 1991 slacker work, “Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture,” that “nostalgia is a deadly weapon,” and one supposes those words can be cautionary tales about our youth, what we romanticize and what potentially holds us back from growing because we can’t move on past it. I’m not exactly sure what that has to do with the new documentary, “‘The Elephant 6 Recording Co.,” about the late ‘90s recording collective The Elephant 6, mostly comprised of lo-fi indie bands from in and around Athens, Georgie, other than to say after watching this appropriately chaotic, shaggy and baggy documentary, Coupland’s quote immediately flashed back into my memory.
