Extraction 2” (now streaming on Netflix), you know that it’s stuffed with even more edge-of-your-seat, bone-crunching, glass-breaking action. (It really is.) Chris Hemsworth returns as Tyler Rake, recovering from his seemingly mortal wounds in the first movie and taking on an even more death-defying mission. The stunts are bigger, the camerawork more dazzling (there a truly unbelievable prison break sequence captured as one unbroken take) and the choreography even more impressive. In fact, we were so impressed with “Extraction 2” that we had director Sam Hargrave (returning from the first film) walk us through one of the most impressive bits of action – a fight sequence that takes place in and on top of a glass-enclosed gym in an European high-rise.
Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Chris Hemsworth dangles from skyscrapers, dodges a fiery helicopter and survives several bludgeons to the head as former black ops mercenary Tyler Rake in Netflix’s blockbuster sequel “Extraction 2.” Now, onlookers can feel (literally!) the sweat that drips from Hemsworth’s chiseled face during those unrelenting, death-defying sequences through interactive billboards in New York City and Los Angeles. It’s all part of Netflix’s unconventional marketing strategy for the film, one that’s designed to make viewers at home feel like they are part of the action. Directed by Sam Hargrave, “Extraction 2” picks up as Tyler Rake, back from the brink of death, embarks on a risky mission to save the imprisoned family of a ruthless gangster.
Extraction looks to become a formidable action franchise for Netflix.Directed by Sam Hargrave, both films see mercenary Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) tackle a dangerous rescue mission with explosive consequences. They’re both written by Joe Russo and adapted from the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks. In Extraction 2, released on Netflix in June, Hemsworth, Golshifteh Farahani and Adam Bessa reprise their roles from the original.
Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor Filmmaker Sam Hargrave knew he would have to up the ante when it came to filming Netflix’s action sequel “Extraction 2.” The first film, which came out in 2020, contained a 12-minute sequence that included a car chase, gun battles, knife battles and plenty of explosions. It was during early conversations with producer Joe Russo that the idea of a longer sequence came up. Says Hargrave, “Joe said, ‘It’d be cool if we opened the film with Tyler (Chris Hemsworth) extracting someone from a prison. Joe he wrote this into the script, ‘And thus follows the greatest oner in cinema history.’” Hargrave devised a plan forward, and the result was a mind-blowing, 21-minute one-take sequence that sees black ops specialist Tyler Rake entering a prison to rescue the family of a violent gang member. As Tyler and the family members escape the prison and jump into armored vehicles, a chase ensues, and when they board a train, it comes under attack by gangsters who land a helicopter on the train.

Asked who would win in a fight between the two, he told Dexerto: “I love that conversation.

Hargrave, whose directorial debut was the first “Extraction,” has lent his stunt expertise to the franchise’s second film as well. The stuntman-turned-director stunned fans with the sequel’s use of a singular shot for a 21-minute action sequence.

Extraction 2 has said he’d like to see John Wick square off against Tyler Rake in a film.Chris Hemsworth returns as Tyler in the upcoming action thriller sequel, which is set for release on Netflix Friday, June 16.Speaking ahead of the sequel’s release, director Sam Hargrave was asked who’d win in a fight between John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, and Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake.“I love that conversation,” Hargrave told Dexerto. “You know… as the director of the Tyler Rake world, I’d have to support my man Tyler Rake.“But then, in the canon of movies and legendary skills, it’s hard.
Chris Hemsworth is getting ready to celebrate his 40th birthday this summer, but he's not even close to slowing down! When the actor and his director, Sam Hargrave, sat down with ET's Rachel Smith to promote their thrilling Netflix sequel this week, Hemsworth was quick to clarify comments that got «sort of blown out of proportion» about him taking a step back from acting.Last fall, the star told that he planned to take some time off after promoting his unscripted Disney+ adventure series,. The decision, he said at the time, coincided with an episode of the show on death, as well as one in which Hemsworth agreed to take a genetic test, which ultimately revealed that his risk of developing Alzheimer's is eight to 10 times higher than that of the general population — due to the fact that Hemsworth has two copies of APOE4 (the apolipoprotein E gene), one from his mom and one from his dad. After learning the results on the show, Hemsworth said in a confessional that «the idea that I won't be able to remember the life I've experienced, or my wife, my kids, is probably my biggest fear.»However, Hemsworth said, the decision to take a brief career break was not as connected to the genetic test as it may have seemed.«It all got a little sort of blown out of proportion,» he shared.
Courtney Howard A funny thing happened during our worldwide lockdown in 2020. With theaters shuttered, our immediate movie-going futures looking bleak and escapist entertainment becoming a therapeutic necessity, along came the rise of The Streaming Service Blockbuster — most notably “Extraction.” Stuntman-turned-director Sam Hargrave’s muscular albeit convoluted actioner, centered on a mercenary sent to rescue the kidnapped son of a crime lord, was handed a captive audience. All the folks at home made it a worldwide sensation for Netflix, and it continues to tear up the charts as their seventh most popular film ever (according to their internal, recently-released metrics). Three years later and armed with a far better, bloody and bruising quest for the laconic hero, Hargrave, star Chris Hemsworth and screenwriter Joe Russo return to the burgeoning franchise with “Extraction 2”. (The graphic novel “Ciudad,” upon which the first film was based, was written by Ande Parks from a story by Parks and the Russo brothers.) The filmmakers’ renewed vigor is our reward as, similar to its unfussy title, this sequel deals in clean-lined action and suspense, removing much of the excessive weight that bogged down the original. As its compelling lead character cuts through his personal strife whilst helping another family find the sense of freedom he too seeks, a new trail is blazed that recenters the series on bone-crunching brutality and bravado.
Tyler Rake was clinically dead when we last saw him at the end of “Extraction,” tumbling over a bridge in Bangladesh with a fatal, burbling bullet wound to his neck. But death is no match for Netflix.
It’s no death-defying leap to state that we are currently in the middle of a blockbuster action revolution, in which former stunt performers and coordinators-turned-feature-directors have reminded us why we love explosive scenes, sharply executed fights, and over-the-top brawn. Although movie stars still help sell in these projects (often by boasting how much they do their own stunts), it’s the filmmakers who are now the real ass-kickers.
Chris Hemsworth has already been a part of several epic franchises, but as an Australian, he might be the most excited to be part of !The star is set to appear in, the upcoming film that serves as both a prequel and sequel to 2015's , which stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the titular character, Imperator Furiosa, which was originated by Charlize Theron in «The young kid in me who grew up on watching and those films — that franchise has been running for 45 years,» he marveled. «To be involved in it in any shape or form was a dream, working with George Miller was the most incredible experience I've ever had.»However, there wasn't much more that Hemsworth could say about the role, noting, «It's a bit like working in the Marvel films… I can't give you nothing.»What he can talk about is the sequel to his high-octane Netflix thriller, in which Hemsworth stars as mercenary-for-hire Tyler Rake, who gets sent on a harrowing new mission that included plenty of death-defying stunts, many of which Hemsworth performed himself.«Everything that Sam Hargrave, our director, pitched me… I had both the enthusiasm and the excitement on one side of the brain and the fear and the hesitation on the other,» he said of the filming experience.
