There can be no doubt the champagne corks are popping at Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Whale indie distributor A24 tonight. Not only did it see a record-setting performance at the SAG Awards, where it won all five of the movie categories (other than the non-televised stunt ensemble), but also Saturday night, where it took the top Best Picture award at the Producers Guild. Both often are Oscar-prescient guild awards shows that last year, and in many others, have foretold just exactly what would happen at the Academy Awards — not always but often.

Jon Burlingame editor German composer Volker Bertelmann won the original score Oscar Sunday night for his music for the World War I epic “All Quiet on the Western Front.” “By working on a film like that, you are always touched,” Bertelmann said in accepting the honor, referring to the harrowing nature of the film. “Sometimes you have to make the screen very small because there are so many explosions happening.” It is Bertelmann’s first Academy Award. He was previously nominated, under his stage name Hauschka, for his music for the 2016 film “Lion” (co-composed with Dustin O’Halloran). He won the BAFTA for “All Quiet” on Feb. 19.

Naman Ramachandran For the first time in its 37-year history, the SXSW festival in Austin will host South Asian House, an initiative to celebrate South Asians from India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Maldives as well as accomplished members of the diaspora. The initiative, scheduled for the first weekend of SXSW on March 11 and 12, 2023, will feature programming around film and television, dance and music, technology, business, fashion, comedy and climate change from a South Asian world view across plenaries, sessions, panel discussions, workshops, art exhibits, book launches and music concerts. It will take place in the 4th Street neighborhood of downtown Austin, near the Austin Convention Center event headquarters.

As is always the case, each and every Sunday you can expect a look at what made the most money in theaters, as well as just how all of the new releases fared. This week, we only have one new release opening wide and it’s the would be blockbuster Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), or just Birds of Prey for short, if you’d prefer.
