The audience frequently broke into sustained waves of laughter watching BFFs Eden (Ilana Glazer, who also co-wrote and produced) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau) contend with how Dawn’s second child and Eden’s unexpected pregnancy upend their lifelong, so-close-they-send-each-other-photos-of-their-poops friendship.

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic When Judd Apatow and the boys make an R-rated pregnancy comedy, they call it “Knocked Up.” But when “Broad City” co-creator Ilana Glazer and stand-up comic Michelle Buteau try their hand at the same subject, the every-bit-as-raunchy result comes with a far classier title: “Babes.” That pun is just one of the movie’s many acts of irreverent reclamation, as helmer Pamela Adlon — making a confident switch to feature directing after seminal small-screen contributions to “Louie” and “Better Things” — and her stars de-objectify a label used by dudes and slap it upon themselves. The cheeky term applies to both lifelong amigas Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Buteau) and the infants they spend most of the movie incubating.

Selome Hailu Netflix has renewed “Survival of the Thickest” for a second season and ordered a comedy special from co-creator and star Michelle Buteau. “Survival of the Thickest” is based on Buteau’s essay collection of the same name. Per the logline, the series “centers on Mavis Beaumont (Buteau).

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Neon has acquired North American rights to “Immaculate,” a religious thriller starring Sydney Sweeney. Sweeney, the star of “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus,” also produced the film with Black Bear and Middle Child Pictures. Neon is planning a theatrical release on a yet-to-be-determined date.

Angelique Jackson It might officially be fall, but Netflix had a “Strong Black Summer.” At least, that was the name of the streamer’s warm-weather months campaign promoting a string of TV, film and documentary projects fronted by Black talent. Among the hot titles were Gabrielle Union’s rom-com “The Perfect Find,” the John Boyega-starring conspiratorial caper “They Cloned Tyrone,” a fourth season of the Emmy-nominated comedy “The Upshaws,” comedian Michelle Buteau’s semi-autobiographical series “Survival of the Thickest,” the “Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop” documentary, and a first look at awards contenders “Stamped from the Beginning” and “Rustin.” “The goal of ‘Strong Black Summer’ was to generate conversation and create community with Black consumers and partners,” says Netflix’s Shelly Gillyard, vice president of marketing in the U.S.

Alison Herman TV Critic It’s a great irony of the streaming age that many platforms built their audience on the backs of sitcoms with vast, bingeable catalogs — only to produce abbreviated, compressed sitcoms of their own. Classics like “Friends,” “The Office” and “Seinfeld” have served as a bridge between a previous era of television and the current one, offering lessons in what can make a show an enduring favorite. One of those lessons is the value of a 22-episode season, which allows room to establish an ensemble while preserving the efficiency of standalone installments. But streamers generally prefer to invest in a wider variety of shows; even when they do make traditional sitcoms that could, in another world, air on NBC, full seasons are compressed into just a handful of chapters.

Marta Balaga Genndy Tartakovsky, behind “Hotel Transylvania” and “Star Wars: Clone Wars,” has revealed the voice cast – led by Adam Devine, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn – and a first-look image for his upcoming R-rated animation, “Fixed.”  The film, which will be completed in September, is an adult comedy about Bull: an average dog who discovers he’s going to be neutered in the morning. As the gravity of this life-altering event sets in, Bull realizes he needs one last adventure with his pack of best friends as these are the last 24 hours with his balls. New Line Cinema and Sony Pictures Animation are on board.

Audie Awards will feature special guest judges Whoopi Goldberg and AudioFile’s Robin Whitten. Comedian and podcast host Michelle Buteau will host the festivities. The Audie Awards will take place on March 28 at the Chelsea Piers’ Pier Sixty in New York City. The ceremony will be available to stream for audiences. “I’m truly so damn excited to be hosting this year’s Audie Awards,” Buteau said in a statement Thursday. “As an audiobook narrator myself, it’s necessary to celebrate my peers and the critical craft of storytelling. I simply can’t wait to put faces to the voices!”

Ethan Shanfeld The writers of this season’s top films and series face off tonight at the Writers Guild of America Awards, the final awards ceremony before next week’s 95th Oscars. The WGAs are not televised but rather held at concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York City. “Abbott Elementary” star Janelle James hosted the West Coast edition, while comedian Michelle Buteau (“First Wives Club,” “The Circle”) is leading the New York festivities. A bellwether for the Academy Awards, the WGAs may indicate which film will take home statuettes for the Oscars’ original and adapted screenplay categories. Daniels’ awards frontrunner “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which recently picked up awards from the Directors Guild, Producers Guild and Screen Actors Guild, will once again battle it out with Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner’s “The Fabelmans” and Todd Field’s “Tár.” The guild also celebrates the year’s finest in television, with nominations for top dramas “Severance” and “Better Call Saul” and comedy favorites “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building.”

BreAnna Bell Netflix has announced Wanda Sykes’ upcoming hour-long standup special, “I’m An Entertainer” will arrive on the streaming service on May 23. The episode will premiere globally. Set at the Miller Theater in Philadelphia, the comedian, actress and producer Wanda Sykes returns for her second hour-long Netflix comedy special. According to the streamer, the comedian tackles a host of topics from the challenges of raising Gen Z teens to the dilemmas of being a liberal in a hyper charged political climate. Known for her social commentary, Sykes delivers “her insightful and ferocious wit and candor audiences have come to know and love,” reads the official description. The special was filmed in early February 2023.

Netflix has opted not to renew new comedy series Blockbuster for a second season.
