The British Library has acquired an archive of “notebooks, ephemera and photographs” that were pulled together by writer and journalist Hunter Davies when he wrote the only official biography of The Beatles all the way back in 1968. I don’t know about you, I’m most excited by the ephemera.

The last surviving member of The Monkees, Micky Dolenz, has sued the FBI demanding access to documents it possesses about the band. In a lawsuit filed this week, he says that he has attempted to gain this information via a Freedom Of Information Act request, but has so far had no response beyond an acknowledgement that his request was received in June.Dolenz has launched the lawsuit because, he says, he has exhausted all other avenues, despite being “entitled to timely receipt of nonexempt copies of all records responsive to his [request]”, according to Law360.He also hints in the lawsuit at what he plans to do with the information he seeks, saying that he “has the ability to disseminate information on a wide scale and may use information obtained through his request in an original work, particularly an independent film, documentary or book”.Now, you might be thinking, “Pfft! A letter written by John Lennon in response to an interview Paul McCartney did with Melody Maker back in 1971 is going up for auction. The letter sent to – and published by – the music magazine is addressed directly to McCartney and goes into detail about the Beatles’ post-break up business arrangements, among other things.Opening with “Dear Paul, Linda, et al the wee McCartneys”, the letter is topped with a handwritten annotation requesting that Melody Maker editor Richard Williams publish the document to give Lennon “equal time” so he can respond to comments made my McCartney in his interview.That interview came eighteen months after The Beatles split, and followed protracted legal wranglings over the band’s finances – launched by McCartney.
