The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie Unite in a Dream Double Bill for Emotional Millennials: Live Review

William Earl Ben Gibbard was at the height of his powers in 2003, delivering the two records his entire output is measured against: Death Cab for Cutie’s fourth album, “Transatlanticism,” and the Postal Service’s sole LP, “Give Up.” Although Gibbard is the frontman for both groups, the bands’ sounds are miles apart. DCFC started as a modest Washington-based rock outfit with a sound that developed from Built to Spill-esque indie to more sweeping, experimental studio rock, with the yearning long-distance relationship lyrics of “Transatlanticism” perfectly matching the sweeping guitars and tasteful drumming.

Jem Aswad Executive Editor, Music FOMO is such a strong human emotion that it defies logic, especially when looking at photos or video from Studio 54 or a Beatles concert or Truman Capote’s Black-and-White Ball… or, as “Indie/Seen,” veteran photographer Piper Ferguson’s new photo book demonstrates, the indie-rock scene of the early ‘00s. LCD Soundsystem, Coachella 2016 (Photo: Piper Ferguson) It’s a time capsule of the era dominated by the Strokes, the Killers, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the White Stripes, Interpol, LCD Soundsystem, the Rapture and many now-obscure acts from that scene, and even though the photos were taken 20-odd years ago, the artists are presented so vividly that it’s hard not to wish you were there.

Jenny Lewis’ Infectious Energy Lights Up New York Stop of Her ‘Joy’All’ Tour: Concert Review

William Earl It’s hard to believe that Jenny Lewis has been an indie rock mainstay for almost 25 years. She first burst onto the scene as lead singer and guitarist of Rilo Kiley, and since the release of their debut EP in 1999, she’s been dashing through genres and writing songs about love and heartbreak. After Rilo Kiley’s 2013 breakup, Lewis was prolific with new material and touring, releasing solo albums as well as collaborative work with Johnathan Rice, The Watson Twins and her supergroup Nice as Fuck. After spending much of 2021 playing arena shows opening for Harry Styles, Lewis is back on the road solo again promoting her breezy new album “Joy’All.” Her energetic show Tuesday night at New York’s The Rooftop at Pier 17 brought a great bounce to the new music from her fourth solo album and added a cheery sheen to her older material.
