Zack Sharf Digital News Director Dolph Lundregn recently told ComicBook.com that a “really good” original cut of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” exists, but it’s not the one that fans got to see when the DC sequel opened in theaters over Christmas. To date, the sequel has earned $109 million at the domestic box office and $375 million worldwide — a far cry from the $1 billion the original “Aquaman” crossed to become the highest-grossing DC Universe film. Lundregn appears in the “Aquaman” films as Nereus, the king of the Atlantean tribe of Xebel who also happens to be the father of Aquaman’s love interest Mera (Amber Heard).
Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter “Night Swim,” a supernatural thriller produced by horror mavens Jason Blum and James Wan, waded to second place in its debut. The film, marking the first nationwide release of the year, collected a moderate $12 million from 3,200 North American theaters. Those ticket sales weren’t enough to topple “Wonka,” which claimed first place again with $15 million in its fourth weekend of release.
Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter “Night Swim,” a supernatural thriller about a ghost-plagued pool, is attempting to start the 2024 box office with a splash. The Universal Pictures film, which marks the year’s first nationwide release, is targeting a debut of $9 million to $11 million from 3,200 North American theaters. It’s a decent start for the $15 million-budgeted movie, which won’t face competition on the horror front until March’s haunted-teddy-bear-inspired “Imaginary.” “Night Swim,” written and directed by Bryce McGuire and starring Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon, follows a family who finds out that an otherwordly presence haunts the backyard swimming pool in their new home.
Amber Heard reprised her role of Mera in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The actress took to social media to acknowledge all the support she’s been receiving from fans who watched the DC Studios film.
Zack Sharf Digital News Director Amber Heard posted to Instagram some behind-the-scenes photos from the making of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” and thanked fans for supporting her return to the comic book franchise as Mera. The post is notable considering that Heard claimed in court during her 2022 defamation trial involving Johnny Depp that Warner Bros. “didn’t want to include me” in the “Aquaman” sequel due to the fallout from her divorce from Depp.
Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” didn’t give Hollywood much to be merry about at the Christmas box office. The comic book sequel, starring Jason Momoa as the King of Atlantis and directed by James Wan, opened slightly below estimates with $27.7 million over the traditional weekend and a disappointing $40 million through the four-day holiday frame.
Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” opened to $80 million at the international box office, which isn’t all that super considering those ticket sales are on par with eventual big-budget superhero disappointments like “The Flash,” “The Marvels” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” The comic book sequel, starring Jason Momoa as the king of Atlantis and directed by James Wan, has generated $120 million globally to start, including a weak $40 million in North America. Black Manta returns as the villain, still eager to avenge his father’s death and take Aquaman down.Reviews from critics so far have been generally poor, with the movie currently scoring a 37 per cent rating on review aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes.Empire gave the movie two stars, and called it a “disappointing send-off that sees the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) go out with a squelch rather than a splash”.Meanwhile, The Independent rated the film one star, calling the franchise “brainless”.

Things started out so well for the DC Extended Universe, but the muted release of this sequel to director James Wan‘s 2018 “Aquaman” marks the end of the line for it. The first film grossed $1.15 billion.
the popular 2018 original.DC heads Peter Safran and James Gunn are hard at work on revamping the entire stumbling franchise, starting with a shiny new “Superman,” but first they had to waste precious time finessing the problem-plagued and oh-so-five-years-ago “Aquaman 2.”Adding to their headaches, the studio was forced to deal with Amber Heard, who played A-man’s girlfriend, Mera, in the first film, but is now best known for her pass-the-popcorn Johnny Depp defamation trial. What did director James Wan do? He kept Heard, but gave her character a sidelining injury within the first 40 minutes. The lazy “Lost Kingdom” is built on such compromises and dodges.
In Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, directed by James Wan, and written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick Jason Momoa reprises his role as Arthur Curry, diving back into the deep and turbulent waters of superhero cinema. With an ensemble cast including Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Randall Park, Nicole Kidman, and Temuera Morrison, the film navigates through a series of high-stakes conflicts, both personal and global. However, it’s not just the seas that are stormy; the film itself walks a messy path of narrative and visual execution.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” director James Wan told Empire magazine for a new cover story that the reshoot process on his latest DC tentpole was not out of the ordinary, despite many reports claiming post-production on the sequel was a disaster and required at least three rounds of reshoots. “We probably did seven or eight days,” Wan clarified about the reshoots, “which is nothing for a movie of this size. It was just spread out because it’s so hard to get your actors back once you’ve finished the initial shoot.” Wan previously addressed the reshoot rumors in an Entertainment Weekly interview, saying, “We have big actors in this movie, and everyone’s schedule is really hard,.
