Grammy Spotlight: Rock and Alternative Artists to Watch, from Wet Leg to My Chemical Romance

Jessica Shalvoy Over the past few Grammy ceremonies, the Recording Academy has seemingly warmed up to the idea of alternative and rock seeping back into the mainstream again. With Glass Animals, Arlo Parks and Japanese Breakfast all getting nominations for best new artist last year, it opens the door for acts other than the usual rock ‘n’ roll Grammy mainstays like Foo Fighters, AC/DC, Paul McCartney and Kings of Leon to really shine. On top of the alternative album award, which has existed since the early ’90s, they’ve even added a new category, best alternative music performance. This is a track and single category that will eliminate the need to push songs that are generally classified as alternative into either the rock or pop categories, as happened a few years ago when Beck’s “Colors” was thrown in with Post Malone, Camila Cabello, Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga for best pop solo performance at the 2019 Grammy Awards.

Ohana Festival Has Eddie Vedder, Pink, Jack White and More Letting Their Freak Flags (and Tom Petty Love) Fly at the Beach

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Ohana Festival is California’s coolest music festival, literally, and there’s a case to be made for the figurative usage too. Eddie Vedder’s annual beachside gathering takes place yards away from the Doheny State Park cove where he learned to surf, and steady breezes over the weekend provided waves for dozens of surfers on one side of the chain-link fence and end-of-summer mellowness for about 15,000 concertgoers on the other. The festival doesn’t just have ocean draft to recommend it; there were rock squalls from Jack White, pop lungpower from Pink, whatever additional currents were caused by Stevie Nicks’ flowing garments… and, further down the bill, an honestly eclectic lineup that was like a continual 13-mph breath of fresh air.

Mykki Blanco has released the latest single from their upcoming album, ‘Stay Close To Music’, a track called ‘Pink Diamond Bezel’.“I am always hoping to create a new alchemy for my sound and for my entire career I have been experimenting with how far I can push rap – from the production to the musical choices to the inspirations”, says Blanco. “Much of my new album and last year’s ‘Broken Hearts & Beautysleep’ is a departure from anything I had done in the past and I hadn’t really made a hip-hop track in years when I wrote ‘Pink Diamond Bezel.’ The song feels as if it’s the love child of Pharrell Williams and The Neptunes as much as Jack White”.“When I think about the vibe of ‘Pink Diamond Bezel’ I imagine a stretch limousine riding through snow-capped mountains, drinking Kahula and cream with a group of friends in cashmere sweaters, very après-ski, then out of nowhere a shaman appears in the middle of the road, the car halts – a spell is cast, the road catches fire, and we’re forced to kneel in supplication to the forces of nature”, they go on.

In it, Martha, who is that universe’s Joker, asks a character called Psycho-Pirate to reveal everything he knows about the DC universe, including the original Joker’s true name.White has called the Joker’s real name reveal as more than a “coincidence” since he had drawn inspiration from the character.“An interesting note; during the process of putting together the artwork for my album ‘Fear of the Dawn’ last year, I asked artist Rob Jones to communicate with the amazing DC comic artist Mikel Janin to see if he would be interested in a commission: illustrating me in the range of the style that he draws his version of The Joker for DC comics,” white said via Instagram.White added: “Bizarre patterns and coincidences emerge in the universe that we only see glimpses of at times, some meaningful, some meaningless.

Jack White is confused by Snoop Dogg’s new cereal: “Answers demanded”

Jack White has shared some thoughts on Snoop Dogg and Master P‘s new breakfast cereal, ‘Snoop Loopz’.Made by the rappers’ company Broadus Foods, ‘Snoop Loopz’ is a gluten-free multigrain cereal that contains “more corn, more flavour and more marshmallows”.Broadus Foods are also donating a portion of profits from sales of their products to charity, including the homelessness organisation Door Of Hope.White shared an Instagram post yesterday (August 16) about ‘Snoop Loopz’ in which he congratulated Snoop “on his new cereal release, and a pat on the back for its charitable benefits that it will be producing, nice one”.“But,” he added, “I do have a couple of important questions about the box that the cereal is delivered to customers in.“In the press release from Broadus Foods, the photo of the cereal box contains the words ‘MORE MARSHMALLOWS’. More than what? If this is in fact a brand new cereal, it can’t be more marshmallows than ‘before’.A post shared by Jack White (@officialjackwhite)“Is it a statement that this cereal has more marshmallows than say… a bag of sand, or a typical Caesar salad? Or, is it a DEMAND from Snoop Dogg himself that we just have more marshmallows in this world in general? That last theory is my hope.“Lastly, the photograph on Master P’s Instagram shows a DIFFERENT phrase, an un-plural ‘MORE MARSHMALLOW’ without the ‘S’.”White concluded his post: “Photo attached, answers demanded.” Snoop has yet to respond to White’s questions.Earlier this week, Snoop was pictured in the studio with Eminem and Dr.

Pro-gun activist who forced Music Midtown’s cancellation now set to “challenge” Georgia venues

which prompted the recent cancellation of the Atlanta festival Music Midtown, has now said that he wishes to “challenge” the live music promoter’s firearms ban inside its Georgia venues. The annual festival, which had been due to welcome the likes of My Chemical Romance, Jack White and Future from September 17-18, cancelled its 2022 edition earlier this month “due to circumstances beyond our control”.Billboard subsequently reported that recent changes to Georgia’s gun laws, which prevented Music Midtown’s owner Live Nation from banning festivalgoers from bringing guns on to the publicly owned festival grounds at Piedmont Park, were “the likely cause” for the cancellation. In a new interview with Billboard, Georgia IT worker, author and vocal gun rights activist Phillip Evans recalled how, in the weeks before the cancellation, he warned a contractor hired to handle security at Music Midtown that “should any member of your security team accost a legal carrier of weapons … [then] your company (and any involved individual) could be sued for damages”.“I urge you to honour and follow our state weapons law here in Georgia,” he added.A post shared by Music Midtown (@musicmidtown)Evans has now told Billboard that he never pushed for Music Midtown’s cancellation, and that he didn’t expect Live Nation to pull the plug on the event.“There’s nothing in my blog, in my opinion, that indicates I celebrated the decision,” he added. “I would’ve actually been thrilled had Live Nation gone ahead and had the event and said that they were following state law.”Describing himself as a “hardcore music fan” who “loves all kind of music from all eras”, Evans says that he wants Live Nation to “abide by a law”.
