Padma Lakshmi is brightening up the red carpet!
Renowned chef and season 10 winner Kristen Kish has been named the new host of Bravo’s “Top Chef”.
Bravo has found its new host for Top Chef. Season 10 winner Kristen Kish will take the reins for the hit culinary competition show’s 21st season following the exit of longtime host Padma Lakshmi.
Jennifer Maas TV Business Writer Unpack your knives and stay: Kristen Kish has been named the new host of Bravo’s “Top Chef,” following the exit of longtime staple Padma Lakshmi after the recently concluded “world all-stars” Season 20. Kish, who was the winner of Season 10 and has served as guest judges multiple times since, will begin her hosting duties with the upcoming Season 21, which Bravo has revealed will be set in Wisconsin. Head judge Tom Colicchio and judge Gail Simmons will both return for Season 21. Lakshmi announced her decision to step away from “Top Chef” just ahead of the Season 20 finale, which saw Buddha Lo take the title of world all-star in the special international season held in honor of the show’s 20th anniversary. Having hosted the show for 19 seasons, Lakshmi said she now needs to “make space” for her Hulu series “Taste the Nation,” her books and “other creative pursuits.”
Jennifer Maas TV Business Writer SPOILER ALERT: This interview contains spoilers from the Season 20 finale of Bravo’s “Top Chef.” Buddha Lo became the first ever “Top Chef: World All-Stars” winner Thursday, beating out his finale competition Sara Bradley and Gabri Rodriguez in the Paris-set “Top Chef” Season 20 finale. But Lo’s win was historic beyond that special 20th anniversary season achievement, as he became the first “Top Chef” contestant to ever win two seasons back to back, having claimed victory in Season 19, “Top Chef: Houston.” Adding another layer of prestige, Lo has the honor of being the final contestant to be declared winner by Padma Lakshmi before she exits the cooking competition after 19 seasons as host.
Alison Herman TV Critic This is going to sound like a backhanded compliment, but I mean it: One of Padma Lakshmi’s most valuable skills as the host of “Top Chef” — a major part of what will be missed when Lakshmi departs the show after the June 8 finale — is product placement. In the crowded, sometimes tawdry world of reality competitions, “Top Chef” is unique in its credibility. The show is effective entertainment, but over 20 seasons in 17 years, the Bravo mainstay has also established itself as an arbiter of taste on par with the Michelin guide. Some of that authority comes from longevity; some from Lakshmi’s fellow judges, chef Tom Colicchio and editor Gail Simmons; some from casting, which has generated a talent pool so formidable that the show frequently circles back to its own alumni, including for this season’s London-set World All Stars. But a great deal of it comes from Lakshmi, a presence so commanding she can deliver phrases like “the Glad family of products” and “furnished by San Pellegrino” without disrupting the show’s carefully constructed sense of gravitas.
Gail Simmons is sharing her thoughts on Padma Lakshmi‘s decision to exit Top Chef.
Bravo will need to cook up a new host of Top Chef after Padma Lakshmi revealed she was leaving.
Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor British pubs and the famous Harrods food hall served as inspiration for Bravo’s new season of “Top Chef.” Award-winning production designer James Pearse Connelly, who has designed the show’s set for nearly a decade, wanted to capture to essence of British culture for his ninth kitchen. Says Connelly, “It was about how to bring London into the show with all-star chefs from around the world.” Connelly started by looking at how pubs were designed. He says, “I started with wood paneling and that mystery, intimacy, intrigue and sparkle of what a British pub is.” Additionally, he brought in diamond pane glass and paid homage to London’s famous Big Ben with a round, clock tower-inspired doors.
