Pamela Chelin In honor of the late Robbie Robertson, whose “Killers of the Flower Moon” score was his final work, Martin Scorsese hosted a private tribute concert Wednesday in Los Angeles that had guests including Joni Mitchell, Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone watching Jackson Browne and other musicians perform Robertson’s songs as well as score excerpts. The tribute to Robertson — who died on Aug. 9 at age 80 — took place before 200 invited guests at the composer’s longtime recording-studio home, the Village Studios in West L.A.

It was part of Carlile’s friends and family concert, which saw her perform covers of some of the artists who have inspired her throughout her career and play with her friends in the industry.A highlight of the evening came towards the end of the 21-song setlist when Carlile brought out close friend and music icon Joni Mitchell for a surprise appearance, which came amid Mitchell’s general return to live performing following a nine-year hiatus.Here, the two shared stories of their memories about one another over the years including Mitchell calling Carlile “butch” for drinking straight out of a wine bottle, and Carlile recalling their spending time together in Canada (via Spin).

Mitchell was — as hoped — one of the guests at the “Brandi Carlile and Friends” show Saturday night at the Hollywood Bowl, singing her classics “Circle Game, “Ladies of the Canyon” and “Shine” along with the full cast of participants gathered around her.

Most of that comeback set, which as augmented by an all-star cast, is being released as a live album in July, “At Newport,” produced by Mitchell and Brandi Carlile. The album will be released by Rhino on July 28, four days after the one-year anniversary of the surprise show at the Rhode Island Festival. The guest stars who shared lead vocals and instrumentals with Carlile during the “Joni Jam” will all be represented — including Carlile, Marcus Mumford, Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith, Lucius, Celisse and Wynonna Judd. Other players included Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Allison Russell and Blake Mills.

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Don’t let me down Emmys, and nominate the songs of “Daisy Jones.” Variety has learned exclusively about Amazon Prime Video’s plans for which songs will be submitted for Primetime Emmy Awards consideration in the outstanding music and lyrics category from the acclaimed musical drama miniseries “Daisy Jones & the Six.” While there are 11 songs that are part of the tracklist of the fictional album “Aurora,” which was released by Amazon, three tracks will be submitted for the Television Academy — the hypnotic “Let Me Down Easy,” the powerfully passionate “Look at Us Now (Honeycomb),” and the dynamic and thematic showstopper “The River.”

Marcus Mumford and Maren Morris have covered ‘Look at Us Now (Honeycomb)’, a song from new TV show Daisy Jones & The Six.The song is sung by stars Riley Keough and Sam Claflin in the Amazon Prime Video show, but it was co-written by Mumford and Grammy-winning producer Blake Mills.Mumford and Morris have now covered the song for Amazon Music, with Mumford explaining: “Blake and I wrote ‘Look at Us Now (Honeycomb)’ together – with a bit of help – about a year and a half ago for Daisy Jones & The Six.“This time around, we stripped the song right back down to acoustic guitar and a vocal – which is how it was written – and then kind of built it back up from there until we landed on an arrangement that we liked.“I’ve been a fan of Maren for a long time – both her solo music and her work with The Highwomen – and this duet needed a voice like hers. The Mumford & Sons frontman was working at L.A.’s Sound City Studios on his solo record with multi-instrumentalist and producer Blake Mills — who co-wrote and executive produced all 25 songs heard in the Prime Video series, which chronicles the rise and fall of a ’70s rock band — when Mills asked if he wanted to help write a tune for the show. “It was a slower day for my record and Blake was like, ‘Look, do you wanna try this thing for Daisy?'” Mumford tells Variety. “And I often think that… writing begets more writing. If you’re able to flex a similar muscle in a different way, then it can often help the writing you have in front of you as well.”

Marcus Mumford has spoken of how the advice Neil Young gave him a decade ago influenced his debut solo album.The Mumford & Sons frontman is due to release ‘(self-titled)’ this Friday (September 16) via Island (pre-order here). He’s already previewed the project with the singles ‘Grace’ and ‘Cannibal’.Speaking to NME recently, Mumford explained how the process of writing the imminent new record has changed him as a songwriter.“Neil Young sat me down about 10 years ago and told me the importance of recorded music,” the musician explained, “and that I should pay more attention to the way in which we record because I was always [like], ‘Ah, it’s just an advert for a live show.’ He was like, ‘No man, these things last.'”Mumford continued: “I felt like on this record, I listened to that [advice].

Perfume Genius has shared a new surreal short film that is an accompaniment to his new album, ‘Ugly Season’.The 28 minute short film, entitled Pygmalion’s Ugly Season, is directed by visual artist Jacolby Satterwhite and features music from the album, as well as an appearance from Perfume Genius – real name Michael Hadreas.In a press release, Hadreas said: “I gave him [Satterwhite] free reign,” when it came to directing the short.He went on: “We’re both the same age, I feel very aligned with Jacolby when it comes to taste and certain pop culture obsessions.
