Julia MacCary editor The 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards, celebrating TV and film’s top performers, will take place Sunday, Feb. 26, at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. It will stream on Netflix’s YouTube channel at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT. The SAG Awards will hand out awards to actors across 13 categories in TV and film, voted on by SAG-AFTRA’s more than 122,000 members. Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” lead the nominations, with both films earning five nods, including the highest honor of best ensemble. Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon,” Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” and Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking” round out the best ensemble category. “Ozark” led the TV field with four nods, with “Barry,” “Better Call Saul” and “Only Murders in the Building” each receiving three.

Normal People and Aftersun star Paul Mescal says people have been pronouncing his surname wrong since he became famous.The Irish actor, who was recently nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of a single dad in 2022 breakout film Aftersun, was speaking to The Hollywood Reporter when he discussed a common mispronunciation of his surname.“People get confused with how to pronounce my name because of the drink Mezcal,” he said, revealing that he pronounces it with a softer ‘s’ and ‘a’.“Everybody does it,” he added. “I pronounce it ‘Mescal’ and I wonder if I launched a tequila line I would have to, I would call it ‘Mescal’s Mezcal’.“I’m on the fence, I’m on the fence about that one,” he added.In a four-star review of Aftersun, NME wrote: “Liable to increase the cult around Mescal, following his BAFTA-winning turn in Normal People, Aftersun may be small in scale, but it leaves a distinct and lasting impression.

Irish actor Paul Mescal had fans in a spin after speaking Irish on the BAFTA's red carpet.The Normal People star, 27, who has reportedly called time on his romance with musician Phoebe Bridgers, was nominated for Leading Actor at the 76th edition of the awards for his portrayal of single father Calum in independent film, Aftersun. Before the ceremony, he spoke to an interviewer for Irish language channel TG4, where he commended the amount of Irish talent being recognised at this year's BAFTAs.

Austin Butler paid tribute to Lisa Marie Presley after winning best actor at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards for "Elvis." Following his big win at the Royal Festival Hall in London, Butler admitted he felt "honored" to be welcomed into the Presley family and was also grieving Lisa's death. Lisa Marie died in Los Angeles on Jan. 12 at the age of 54.

76th annual EE British Academy Film Awards were announced live during a ceremony hosted by Richard E. Grant and Alison Hammond at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Colin Farrell, Paul Mescal and Cate Blanchett were among the stars wearing a blue ribbon at the EE BAFTAS 2023 to show their support for refugees and displaced people around the world. Bill Nighy, Jamie Lee Curtis and Angela Bassett were also brandishing the #WithRefugees ribbon as they stepped out on the red carpet at London's Royal Festival Hall on Sunday. Speaking to the PA news agency about why she wanted to wear the ribbon, supporting actress nominee Jamie Lee said: “My friend Cate Blanchett is asking people to remind us all in the midst of all the season of shiny things that of course there are terrible refugee crises going on all over the world everywhere all at once and we need to do our part.” These blue ribbons sport the hashtag #WithRefugees, in solidarity with all people forced to flee oppression.

It felt like old times at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Monday, as the Oscar Nominees Luncheon returned to the same room where it took place for decades after its beginnings in the 1980s. There were actors sitting next to sound mixers and directors with production designers, a record 182 nominees taking their seats in tables across three levels of the hotel’s ballroom and a “class photo” memorializing the event.There were stars galore among the attendees, from Cate Blanchett to Ke Huy Quan, Paul Mescal to Bill Nighy, Brian Tyree Henry to Kerry Condon to the biggest movie star of all, Tom Cruise, who was in the room not as an acting nominee but as the Oscar-nominated producer of “Top Gun: Maverick.” And all of them managed to fit onto the big, multilevel riser for the photograph that serves as the event’s most notable souvenir.

K.J. Yossman Bill Nighy is set to be honored with an Icon Award at Newport Beach Film Festival’s U.K. honors on Thursday. Nighy has been selected as the recipient of the annual event’s highest accolade this year in light of his accomplished and vast portfolio of work across film and television, including recent performances in “The Man Who Fell to Earth” and feature film “Living,” for which he is in the running this year for an Oscar and BAFTA for best actor. He is also known for his turns in “Love Actually,” “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and West End play “Skylight,” for which he scored a Tony nomination. The Newport Beach Film Festival U.K. honors, hosted in partnership with Variety, will take place on Feb. 16 in central London and will be presented by Edith Bowman.

Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton, the heirs to the UK throne, will attend the upcoming BAFTA for the first time in three years, Kensington Palace has announced. William, who has been the president of BAFTA since 2010, and Kate will watch the ceremony being held at the Royal Festival Hall on 19 February before meeting the winners and Rising Star Award nominees.The royal couple last attended the event in person in 2020 with the prince last year recording a video message in his place, in which he congratulated those nominated and praised the work of BAFTAs programmes.

There was a special energy at the Palm Springs Convention Center due to the fact that it was the return of the popular annual event since the pandemic shut down the world.Hosted by Entertainment Tonight correspondents Kevin Frasier and Nischelle Turner, the night was awash with star-studded appearances.

Tables weren’t crammed together as closely as usual inside the cavernous Palm Springs Convention Center, but there was a special energy in the room due to the fact that the 2021 and 2022 events had been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Palm Springs they do it all a little differently. At least that is the impression you might have gotten if you attended last night’s 34th Annual International Film Awards gala which kicked off the Desert Film Festival, back in action for the first time since January of 2020, just weeks before Covid would shut everything down. However the bejeweled and upper crust of Palm Springs society were gathered again at the massive Palm Springs Convention Center to celebrate a select group of stars who not so coincidentally all happen to be among the most buzzed of Oscar contenders. With a red carpet that doesn’t stop at the front doors, but actually continues all the way through the huge lobby and then into the actual ballroom itself, this event was, and by the looks of it, a must stop on the way to the Dolby in March.

After some 50 years in the business, Bill Nighy is used to people getting his surname wrong. It actually rhymes with ‘sigh’: the ‘y’ is silent. “My dad was very particular about it,” he says, “and for a while, I used to correct people on his behalf, because he couldn’t bear it when people said ‘Nigh-y’. It really got to him. But I’m very, very accustomed to it. The first time I was ever in a show that was reviewed in a paper, I was Bill Nigby. I’ve been Bill Nighty — that’s a regular one — and if there’s one more than any other, it’s Nighly. It’s funny, when people get things wrong, they don’t get them wrong by simplifying them, they get them wrong by making them more complicated. So, they lengthen my name. It’s always slightly longer than it should be.”

Brendan Fraser will receive the Spotlight Award, Actor at the Palm Springs Film Festival’s awards ceremony, taking place in person at the Palm Springs Convention Center on January 5. The award comes in recognition of the actor’s performance in the critically acclaimed A24 drama The Whale from filmmaker Darren Aronofsky.
