The B-52s’ White House concert cancelled due to “sorrow and pain” of Israel-Hamas war

The B-52s‘ scheduled concert at the White House last night (October 25) was cancelled due to the “sorrow and pain” of the Israel-Hamas war.The US new wave band – best known for their 1989 hit single ‘Love Shack’ – were set to play at an official state dinner for the Australian PM Anthony Albanese, hosted by the US President Joe Biden. In a statement, First Lady Jill Biden said (via The Guardian): “While we had initially planned for the legendary B-52s to perform their iconic dance and party music, we are now in a time when so many are facing sorrow and pain, and we have decided to make adjustments to the entertainment portion of the evening.”It is reported that The B-52s – who are named after a US bomber aircraft – instead attended the state dinner as guests. Presidential military bands provided “instrumental music” in the group’s place.Albanese arrived at the White House on Tuesday (October 24) ahead of a formal state visit yesterday, when he reportedly discussed topics such as Ukraine, China and the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.“Nurturing our partnerships and relationships with our allies is critically important, especially in these tumultuous times,” Jill Biden continued.

How Tina Turner’s ‘Nutbush’ became the unofficial Australian anthem

Ike and Tina Turner, is a cultural staple down under, but its origins are a bit of a mystery. The queen of rock and roll, who tragically died this week at 83 of natural causes, penned the track about her southern hometown of Nutbush, Tennessee.Upon Turner’s passing, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the 12-time Grammy winner created a “soundtrack to our lives.”Jon Stratton, an adjunct professor at the University of South Australia’s School of Creative Industries, traces the dance’s beginnings to the New South Wales education department.Educators realized dance is an effective way to teach children about the arts and get some exercise, he said.“In NSW there seemed to be some kind of committee trying to work out what kinds of dances primary school kids in particular should do as part of physical education,” he told the Aussie outlet SBS News.“What seems to have happened is that somebody devised the Nutbush along the lines of the Madison (another, slightly more complex line dance),” he continued. Its popularity quickly snowballed, captivating classrooms across the country through the ’80s and ’90s. “In terms of teaching kids, it’s innocuous,” Stratton explained, adding that the beat is “really easy” to dance to.

Nick Cave defends accepting invitation to King Charles’ coronation: “I am not a monarchist”

Nick Cave has defended his decision to accept an invite to King Charles’ coronation this weekend, insisting that he is “not a monarchist”.It was reported this weekend that Bad Seeds singer would attend the coronation as part of an Australian delegation, alongside prime minister Anthony Albanese, footballer Sam Kerr and others.Addressing the invitation on his blog The Red Hand Files, Cave responded to fans who appeared confused at his decision to attend, with one writing: “What would the young Nick Cave have thought of that?!”“I’ll make this a quick one because I’ve got to work out what I am going to wear to the Coronation,” Cave replied in his post.He continued: “I am not a monarchist, nor am I a royalist, nor am I an ardent republican for that matter; what I am also not is so spectacularly incurious about the world and the way it works, so ideologically captured, so damn grouchy, as to refuse an invitation to what will more than likely be the most important historical event in the UK of our age. Not just the most important, but the strangest, the weirdest.”The musician then went on to recall once meeting the late Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, which he described as a “mostly awkward affair”, but that the Queen herself “seemed almost extraterrestrial and was the most charismatic woman I have ever met”.“Maybe it was the lighting, but she actually glowed,” he continued.

Christian Schools Pull Out Of Albanese Government’s Consultation To Protect LGBT Students, Staff

Christian Schools in Australia have pulled out of a consultation process launched by the Anthony Albanese-led Labor government to reform anti-discrimination laws to ban religious schools from expelling students or sacking teachers for being LGBTQI. Family First Party led by NSW MLC Lyle Shelton reported that Christian Schools Australian and the Australian Association of Christian Schools had “lost faith” in the Australian Law Reform Commission, which was tasked with making recommendations. The two groups represent schools that educate around 150,000 children. Federal anti-discrimination laws currently grant religious schools and organisations exemptions that allow them to discriminate against LGBTQI students, and teachers.ALRC recommended that the law be reformed to make it unlawful for religious educational institutions to discriminate against students “on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity, marital or relationship status, or pregnancy”. The proposed law aims to  “protect teachers and other school staff from discrimination on the grounds of sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital or relationship status, or pregnancy”. The AACS said on its website that they were disappointed with the ALRC proposals.
