Hayden Panettiere Defends ‘Scream’ Co-Star Melissa Barrera, Calls Her Firing ‘Very Unfair and Upsetting’

Michaela Zee “Scream” franchise star Hayden Panettiere has spoken out about Melissa Barrera‘s firing from the horror film series, calling her controversial exit “very unfair and upsetting.” Barrera, who played Sam Carpenter in 2022’s “Scream” and 2023’s “Scream VI,” was fired last November from the upcoming “Scream 7” after her social media posts about Palestine were deemed antisemitic by Spyglass, the production banner behind the hit horror franchise. Spyglass said in a statement to Variety at the time: “We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.” “After she [spoke out], then a whole bunch of other actors and people in the industry started to do the same thing, right?” Panettiere said in a recent interview with The Messenger.

Melissa Barrera Says ‘Scream’ Firing Led to a ‘Big Awakening’: ‘I’m Just So Grateful for Everything That’s Happened’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Melissa Barrera weighed in on her controversial exit from the “Scream” franchise while attending the Sundance Film Festival for the premiere of her latest horror movie, “Your Monster.” “Honestly, I think I finally am becoming who I’m supposed to be in life, and the last few months have been a big awakening of that,” Barrera told the Associated Press when asked about her “Scream” exit. “I’m just so grateful for everything that’s happened.” Barrera played Sam Carpenter, the daughter of Billy Loomis (played by Skeet Ulrich in the original films), in 2022’s “Scream” and 2023’s “Scream 6,” the latter of which set a franchise box office record with $108 million at the domestic box office.

Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Special Ops: Lioness,’ Starring Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldana, Is Shameless Military Propaganda: TV Review

Alison Herman TV Critic The women in Taylor Sheridan projects tend to be lone wolves. They also tend to fit into specific, narrow archetypes: the vulnerable naif (Kate Macer in “Sicario”; Jane Banner in “Wind River”); the ferocious badass (Beth Dutton in “Yellowstone”; Hannah Faber in “Those Who Wish Me Dead”); the steely matriarch (Beth’s ancestors Margaret and Cara, who anchor the “Yellowstone” prequel series “1883” and “1923”). The screenwriter is himself a lone wolf, posing for magazine covers in a cowboy hat while denigrating the use of writers’ rooms, and rose to the top of Hollywood’s hierarchy in part through a shameless embrace of genre tropes. Sheridan’s latest series for the streaming service Paramount+ takes its title from another kind of predator — one who travels in packs. “Special Ops: Lioness” isn’t just the first Sheridan show to feature a true multiplicity of female leads; it’s also the first to have an explicitly gendered premise. But just because “Lioness” features more women protagonists doesn’t mean Sheridan has grown any more nuanced in his depiction of them.

Did Chris Rock Choose Baltimore for His Standup Special Because It’s Jada Pinkett Smith’s Hometown?

Baltimore Banner’s Leslie Gray Streeter called Rock out in a column posted Sunday, saying that Rock “contradicted himself when he ended his show last night saying that he hadn’t hit Smith back last year because he was raised ‘not to fight in front of white people.’”“Isn’t that what you’re doing, my dude, while also joking about rooting for Massa to beat Smith’s character in ‘Emancipation’?” Streeter said, referring to Smith’s 2022 historical slave drama from director Antoine Fuqua. “Didn’t you come to a Black woman’s city to call her out of her name to extend a fight and collect a check in front of a paying audience in the theater and across the world?”It wasn’t until the end of the one-hour Netflix special that Rock addressed the elephant in the room and finally lashed out with a year’s worth of resentment.“She started that s—-,” he said of Pinkett Smith’s comments that he should quit hosting the Oscars after he joked in 2016 about the Smith’s boycott of the ceremony when Will Smith wasn’t nominated for his performance in “Concussion.”Rock said that the slap heard around the world had nothing to do with him, noting that it erupted from Smith’s frustration over his own relationship with his wife.

Chris Stapleton strips it down-home for national anthem at Super Bowl

Super Bowl 2023.After country breakout Mickey Guyton sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” in 2022, this year’s Super Bowl LVII honors went to 14-time CMA Award winner Chris Stapleton, who was fresh off of jamming with Stevie Wonder at the Grammys last week. Before the Philadelphia Eagles faced off against the Kansas City Chiefs at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the 44-year-old troubadour — who also has eight Grammys to his name — stripped it down to a bluesy outlaw version with his acoustic guitar and plenty of grizzled grit that no doubt had country traditionalists stomping their feet at the end. Stapleton managed to accomplish what Eric Church couldn’t do two years ago when he was mis-paired with R&B diva Jazmine Sullivan on the biggest stage in the game.

Mark Ruffalo Defends Marvel Output: ‘You Get the Same Version’ of ‘Star Wars’ Every Time, But Not the MCU

Ruffalo doesn’t think Marvel’s output needs to be capped.“It’s not something I worry about,” Ruffalo said when asked by Metro.co.uk if there too much Marvel content.

“If you’ve ever owned a slave, please raise your hand,” Jeffery Robinson asks a live audience at the beginning of “Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America,” a searing documentary based on a lecture he’s spent a decade perfecting.Obviously, nobody in the auditorium raises a hand. This is 2018 New York City! But the few seconds that follow the question are probably the only chance these audience members have to put some distance between themselves and the country’s sorry record of racial oppression.
