Last year, Karina Longworth’s hit Hollywood podcast You Must Remember This looked at the Erotic ‘80s. Longworth is now delving into the same topic of sex in film and TV across the 1990s for the next season.
The show, which is presented in partnership with Audacy’s Cadence13, returns on March 28 with its 21-episode season.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Hollywood movies explored the sexual lives, mores and fantasies of adults with degrees of candor, realism and imagination not seen before or since. While Erotic 80s episodes covered the theme one year at a time, the super-sized Erotic 90s breaks down themes from Lolitas and sex symbols to gender politics and more.
The first episode covers the disastrous rollout of NC-17 and the evolving state of both porn and feminism at the dawn of the 90s, with topics including David Lynch, Harvey Weinstein, “pro-porn” feminism, “the new morality,” video stores, Magic Johnson, date rape and much more.
Later episodes will explore films like Pretty Woman, Thelma and Louise, Fatal Attraction, Single White Female, Showgirls and Wild Things as well as figures such as Madonna, Sharon Stone, and Britney Spears.
Longworth has also partnered with The American Cinematheque, who will program weekly screenings on Tuesday nights at the Los Feliz 3 in Los Angeles of a select film highlighted in that week’s episode. The series will kick off with a screening of Philip Kaufman’s Henry and June in 35mm on March 28 and Julia Roberts’ Sleeping with the Enemy on April 4.
She launched the podcast in April 2014. Other podcasts include Love is a Crime, a limited podcast series for Vanity Fair. She is also the author of Seduction: Sex, Lies and Stardom in Howard Hughes’s Hollywood.

Callum McLennan “Girl, Unknown,” the sophomore feature from Spanish director Pablo Maqueda (“Dear Werner”), currently ranks as one of the early buzz titles at the Málaga Film Festival, even before its world premiere. The film adapts Paco Bezerra’s stage play “Grooming.” Maqueda, Bezerra and Haizea G. Viana wrote the script, which retains the play’s unsettling cat-and-mouse element. It delves into the recesses of desire, raising questions on depravity, sexuality, and the drive to be fulfilled. The story unfolds a pendulum swinging power dynamic between the seemingly innocent 16 year old Carolina, and a middle aged man she meets in a park named Leo. What begins and is a case of grooming morphs into something far more complex due to Carolina not being all she seems. Maqueda shows a Hanekesque talent in balancing the disturbing with the thrilling. On the film, Maqueda told Variety: “I feel the film as a kaleidoscope and the characters as masks. I like stories that navigate in the daily terror of everyday life,”

The 2003 Oscars are coming under scrutiny by entertainment media ahead of Sunday's upcoming ceremony as the "creepiest" in history. While last year's slap heard round the world was one of the most infamous moments in the ceremony's 94 years, and the controversy over "La La Land" winning and then not winning for Best Picture after actress Faye Dunaway's error may be one of the most awkward, media outlets are arguing those were not the "cringiest" the Oscars have had to offer. Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic Tapping into the Japanese national zeitgeist once again with “Suzume,” writer-director Makoto Shinkai surpasses his peers in making films for and about teenagers. Now 50 years old, the anime master christened his latest blockbuster after its heroine, Suzume Iwato (voiced by Nanoka Hara), a 17-year-old orphan on the southwestern island of Kyushu swept up in a cross-country trip to prevent a series of natural disasters. That such a responsibility should fall to someone so young is typical of his oeuvre (see “Weathering With You”), but also an apt way of illustrating the lingering trauma and vulnerability that adolescents feel in many parts of Japan. Funnier and more streamlined than Shinkai’s earlier hypercharged toon epics, “Suzume” is a massive hit in its home country, where it has earned more than $100 million since opening last November — his third film to pass that milestone. The film made its international premiere at the Berlinale, one of two animated features in official competition (the other being Chinese director Liu Jian’s “Art College 1994”). Theatrical releases are scheduled to follow in most countries on or around April 13.
