Former Manchester United captain and previous holder of England's all-time top goalscorer record Wayne Rooney reportedly had to turn down the opportunity to present Harry Kane with the Golden Boot due to MLS commitments.
Rooney had previously held the record for the most goals scored for the Three Lions with 53 strikes to his name. However, on Thursday Tottenham Hotspur striker and United transfer target Kane surpassed that feat thanks to a penalty in the 2-1 victory over Italy in Euro 2024 qualifying.
Kane scored his 55th goal for his country against Ukraine at Wembley Stadium this weekend as the 29-year-old celebrated his achievement in style. Pre-match, the Spurs man received the Golden Boot from FA chairwoman Debbie Hewitt but Rooney was asked if he wanted to perform the duty.

However, he had to reject the offer, according to the Daily Mail, due to his commitments as manager of D.C. United. His side were in action late on Saturday night against New England Revolution in a match Rooney's men lost 2-1.
The 37-year-old was not in attendance at the Audi Field as illness led to him having to watch the defeat at home. Despite not being able to present Kane with the boot, Rooney did take the time to wish the forward well.
He wrote on Twitter: "Congratulations to Harry Kane on becoming England's all-time record goalscorer. I knew it wouldn't take long but that was quick.
"Great man, unbelievable goalscorer and England legend. Congrats Harry."
