EastEnders, after tragically losing baby Peach at the end of last week. Tonight, she had a meeting with market inspector Honey Mitchell (Emma Barton) about taking time off from running her stall, in order to grieve for her lost daughter. However, Honey was unable to give her any good news as they sat down in the Queen Vic.
Honey reluctantly pointed out that because she is self-employed, Whitney didn’t qualify for statutory parental bereavement leave or pay. Whitney asked for her pitch to be held for a couple of weeks while she got things sorted, but Honey admitted that Mr Lister would only be able to hold it for a week at most. She informed Whitney that if it were down to her she would let her take as much time as she needed, but that Mr Lister was concerned that it wasn’t fair on the male stall holders.
Devastated Whitney picked up the leaflet Honey had been referring to to examine it herself, but was left shocked by what she read. Statutory parental bereavement leave and pay in the UK is only applicable to parents who have a stillbirth after 24 weeks, meaning that Whitney would not have been eligible even if she wasn’t self employed. Heartbroken, Whitney revealed to Honey that her ‘baby doesn’t count’.
When Honey offered to have another chat with Mr Lister, Whitney told her not to bother, saying that if even the government won’t recognise baby Peach’s existence, then Mr Lister isn’t going to change his mind. She told Honey to tell him that she would take the week off and after that she would have to reopen. As Honey left, Zack Hudson (James Farrar) joined her, and Whitney explained what she had just discovered, leaving Zack equally as hurt as she pointed out that, in the eyes of the law, their baby didn’t exist.
