The next Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader will be announced on September 5. The new leader will be revealed as MPs return to parliament following the summer recess.
Today, Wednesday July 20, the top three Tory candidates were whittled down to two following the Conservative MPs' final ballot vote. The race is now between Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss.
The choice will now be in the hands of the 160,000 Conservative Party members. The result of this vote will determine the Conservative Party Leader and thus the next Prime Minister, which will be announced on September 5.

Eight candidates entered the race, with six having been knocked out of the running so far. These include former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch, foreign affairs committee chairman Tom Tugendhat, attorney general Suella Braverman, chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, former health secretary Jeremy Hunt, and minister for international trade Penny Mordaunt.
The final two candidates in the Conservative Party leadership race, Truss and Sunak, will battle it out in a live TV debate on BBC One. The programme is titled Our Next Prime Minister and will air on Monday July 25 at 9pm.
Boris Johnson is expected to formally resign as Prime Minister to the Queen to make way for his successor shortly after the newly-elected Tory leader is announced on September 5. The new leader will be invited to meet with the Queen in Buckingham Palace in order to be appointed as Prime Minister.
