An abusive thug with a history of attacking his girlfriends left an ex with a "nasty" black eye during a foul-tempered and alcohol-fuelled fight.
Michael Howlett punched and kicked the woman and pulled her hair during the vicious assault, but went on to claim he was acting in self-defence. Hull Live reports that the 35-year-old denied assaulting the woman and causing actual bodily harm between August 4 and 9 last year – but a jury found him guilty on a majority verdict of 11 to one.
However, the monster, of Boulevard Mews in West Hull, was cleared of nine other offences including intentional strangulation, false imprisonment and making threats to kill during the trial at Hull Crown Court. The court heard that Howlett's relationship with the woman had ended in June last year but that the pair had remained in touch.
The woman went to Howlett's home, where the pair drank together, but he lost his temper after she was sick. Sentencing him to two years in prison, judge Michael Fanning blasted the abuser for his twisted behaviour.
He said: "You decided that you had had enough, you lost your temper with her and you sought to manhandle her. You certainly struck out at least with your fist to her face.
"There were defensive injuries to her hands consistent with her being kicked. This was more than a single blow.
"That makes this a persistent assault. You have a history of domestic violence and this was domestic violence.
"This was a serious assault. She needs to be protected from violence at your hands."
The court heard that the survivor of Howlett's abuse had been left suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and was experiencing flashbacks. She claimed Howlett had barricaded her inside his home with suitcases and prevented her
