Three US citizens accused of plotting to snatch kids and kill their parents have spent £180,000 of taxpayers’ cash trying to stay in Scotland.
Valerie Hayes, Jennifer Amnott and Gary Reburn are wanted in the States for their alleged parts in an attempt to steal five children from a religious community in Virginia in 2018.
The trio are awaiting extradition to the US from Scots jails after the latest of their appeals to remain failed.
Now records from the Scottish Legal Aid Board have revealed the amount spent so far on lawyers.
We told last week how mum-of-three Miriam Berlow-Jackson was duped into inviting Hayes and Amnott to stay at her home near Glasgow with her kids before details of the alleged plot emerged.
Hayes, accused of being the mastermind, has racked up a legal bill of more than £80,000.
Amnott’s legal case has cost the public purse almost £52,000 and Reburn’s almost £45,000.
But the overall bill is expected to be much higher as the suspects may consider taking the case to the European Court of Human Rights.
Frank Jesse Amnott, Jennifer’s husband, is already facing a life sentence in the States after pleading guilty.
The Supreme Court refused to hear the trio’s appeal against extradition in December. Judges ruled they had not raised an arguable point of law.
A spokesman for the Scottish Legal Aid Board said: “Extradition cases can result in higher costs because of their international nature but we work with legal teams to ensure these are managed effectively.”
Miriam Berlow-Jackson told the Record she was traumatised after discovering Hayes, who had lived with her family for almost four months, was wanted in the States for the murderous scheme.
