EXCLUSIVE: Hulu is developing The Midcoast, a drama series based on Adam White’s bestselling novel, from Escape at Dannemora co-creator Brett Johnson, Warren Littlefield’s The Littlefield Company and 20th Television.
Written by Johnson, based on White’s novel, The Midcoast is an hourlong drama set on the scenic coast of Maine exploring the rise and fall of Ed Thatch, a lobster fisherman turned blue collar criminal with an unstable devotion to his wife.
The Midcoast was published in June 2022 by Hogarth Press.
Johnson executive produces along with Littlefield, Ann Johnson, Graham Littlefield and Lisa Harrison for The Littlefield Company. White also serves as executive producer. 20th Television, where The Littlefield Company is under a deal, is the studio.
Johnson co-created, executive produced and served as showrunner on Showtime limited series Escape At Dannemora, nominated for 12 Primetime Emmy Awards. He most recently served as co-executive producer and writer on Hulu’s limited series Candy. He previously served as producer on Ray Donovan, co-executive producer on Good Behavior and writer/story editor on Mad Men, among others. He’s repped by Josh Hornstock, Alan Haldeman and Talia Myers at UTA and Jared Levine at Morris Yorn Barnes & Levine.
White is repped by Ali Lefkowitz at Anonymous Content & Kirby Kim at Janklow & Nesbit.

EXCLUSIVE: Starz is developing The Comedown, a comedic drama series based on Rafael Frumkin’s book by the same name, sources tell Deadline. The project hails from Regina King’s Royal Ties Productions and Freddie Highmore’s Alfresco Pictures as well as TriStar Television, a division of Sony Pictures TV where The Good Doctor star Highmore has had an overall deal. A rep for Starz declined comment.
A series adaptation of Never Let Me Go, the Kazuo Ishiguro novel that was adapted as a film starring Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield, is no longer moving forward at FX, sources close to the project have confirmed to Deadline. Production had not yet begun.

Uzo Aduba has been tapped as the lead of Netflix’s Shondaland murder-mystery drama The Residence, from writer Paul William Davies. Additionally, Liza Johnson (The Last of Us, The Diplomat) has been set to direct the first four episodes of the series. Davies, who serves as showrunner, executive produces with Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers.

EXCLUSIVE: Nicole Kidman is back at HBO with another high-profile limited series based on a novel, The Perfect Nanny. Kidman and Pen15 co-creator and co-lead Maya Erskine are set to star in the project, which HBO landed in a very competitive situation. Erskine is the creator and writer of the limited series, based on the book of the same name by by Leïla Slimani. Legendary Television is the co-studio with HBO.

Fox’s new crime anthology drama Accused launched behind the Dallas Cowboys vs. San Francisco 49ers NFL game on Sunday. The twisty legal thriller from Howard Gordon kept some 8.4M viewers for the duration, setting a ratings record for Fox. But a number of them were left fuming after local Fox stations across the country accidentally cut away in the final minutes, denying them the resolution of the story starring Michael Chiklis.
FX has rounded out the series regular cast for its hourlong pilot The Answers, the network’s adaptation of Catherine Lacey’s novel. Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars) is set to star alongside Raul Esparza (Retreat), Krys Marshall (For All Mankind), Melanie Field ( A League Of Their Own), Pallavi Sharda (Wedding Season) and Kineta Kunutu (Citadel) in the project from Sorry for Your Loss creator Kit Steinkellner, Dopesick creator Danny Strong, Requiem for a Dream director Darren Aronofsky and 20th Television. They join previously announced male lead David Corenswet.
