She'd probably be far too modest to mention it if she was working this week, but your usual Mancunian Way editor, Beth Abbit, won a prestigious journalism award yesterday.
Beth scooped the Feature Writer of the Year gong at the Regional Press Awards, while fellow reporter Ste Topping won Scoop of the Year for his great work on exposing the Awaab Ishak social housing scandal. Meanwhile Chief Manchester United writer Samuel Luckhurst won Sports Journalist of the Year. Well done to all!
I'm in the Mancunian Way hot seat today, with Beth still celebrating and Adam having a day off, and the first story is one extremely close to my heart.
On this day 77 years ago, 33 football fans went to watch a Bolton Wanderers match and never returned home. Hundreds more were injured and thousands who were there will never have forgotten what they witnessed and experienced.
At the time, the Burnden Park disaster was the greatest tragedy in British football history and it brought about the Moelwyn Hughes report, which recommended more rigorous control of crowd size. However, outside of Bolton, the events of March 9 1946 are rarely spoken about.
So today, I think it is only right to start the Mancunian Way by taking a moment to remember the 33.

Måneskin have announced a world tour in support of their latest album ‘RUSH!’ for autumn and winter 2023.The mammoth tour kicks off in September in Hanover, Germany, and will see the Italian rockers making stops in Europe, North America, South America, Japan, UK and Ireland, as well as their first ever shows in Australia. Along the way, they will be performing a landmark gig at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden, while their only UK date will be at Manchester’s AO Arena on December 19, their first ever show in the city.Ticket sale details vary from territory for territory, but for the Manchester date, the O2 Priority pre-sale will begin on Friday (March 17) at 10am, while the general sale commences on Monday (March 20), also at 10am.

Kasabian had been living in Washington State at the time of her death and had changed her last name to «Chiochios» to protect her identity.Kasabian served as the Manson family's lookout during the cult's infamous murder spree. She was also the key witness in the Manson family trials in 1970, which lead to the conviction of cult leader Charles Manson and several of his accomplices. Seven people were killed across two nights in the summer of 1969, and while Kasabian did act as the family's lookout, she did not take part in the actual murders.As for a cause of death for Kasabian, the obtained a copy of her death certificate, but no cause was cited.Kasabian was just 20 years old when she moved to Spahn Ranch in July 1969, an old movie set in Los Angeles where Manson and his followers were living in a commune.
Kasabian‘s band name, has died at the age of 73.A notice in the The News Tribune Of Tacoma was relayed this week by The New York Times, which reported that Linda died recently. Her cause of death has not been made public.Linda’s infamy came from serving as a key witness for the prosecution in the Manson Family murder trial of 1970.
Evan Rachel Wood has hit back at claims by Ashley Morgan Smithline that she “manipulated” her into making allegations of sexual assault against Marilyn Manson.This is the latest development in Manson’s defamation lawsuit against his former partner Wood. He sued her and her girlfriend Illma Gore a year ago, ahead of the premiere of a documentary in which Wood made her own claims of abuse against Manson.Smithline recanted claims she had previously made against Manson in a sworn statement presented by his lawyers to the New York court over seeing the defamation case last week.

The suit was dropped after Smithline’s lawyer withdrew as her representation in October 2022, and she did not meet a deadline of December to acquire new representation or represent herself.Smithline filed a declaration in Los Angeles Superior Court last Thursday (February 24), saying that she was “manipulated” by Wood and other people to go public with the allegations, which Smithline said were “false”.“I succumbed to pressure from Evan Rachel Wood and her associates to make accusations of rape and assault against [Manson] that were not true,” she wrote, claiming that she was “repeatedly gaslit” by Wood.Smithline also stated in the latest declaration that she had a “brief, consensual sexual relationship” with Manson in 2010.As Rolling Stone reports, Wood has claimed in a new legal declaration that the model had first reached out to her in 2019.
