‘The Makanai: Cooking For The Maiko House’ Season One Review: Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Netflix Show Is A Rich and Rewarding Experience

Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan is back, and in a big way, as his action-packed espionage pic Pathaan has been breaking records for a Hindi title since debuting Wednesday in India and overseas. This also ends a lengthy hiatus from the big screen as a lead for SRK, and gives a boost to Bollywood which has had a rough run of late.

“Little Richard: I Am Everything” opens with exactly the kind of pre-title sequence we’ve come to expect from a contemporary rock-history bio-doc, a fast and furious assemblage of archival imagery and iconic audio, bits and pieces reminding us of what this figure did, a snatch of a song, a flash of footage, a quick hit of a later legend assuring us of their greatness (“I’d never seen any of it before,” Mick Jagger assures us), bold proclamations (“He created the template for the rock and roll icon”), assembled with sleek grace.

Nearly three years have passed since David Weil’s bombastic Holocaust revenge series, “Hunters,” debuted on Prime Video to decidedly mixed reviews. The Auschwitz Memorial didn’t hold back when they leveled criticism at the project, calling its depiction of a game of human chess “dangerous foolishness & caricature.” Primarily set in the 1970s, Weil’s story showcases a group of vigilantes on the hunt for Nazis who escaped justice at the end of WWII.

Cannes Palme d’Or-winning director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s first series for Netflix, The Makanai: Cooking For The Maiko House, is based on a best-selling manga about two young girls who move to Kyoto to start their training as ‘maiko’ or apprentice geisha. 

Yash Raj Films (YRF) has dropped the first trailer for upcoming Bollywood spy action thriller Pathaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padikone and John Abraham, which is releasing across India and worldwide on January 25. Watch it above.

There will be no second season for Inside Job, the adult animated conspiracy theory comedy series from Gravity Falls writer Shion Takeuchi and creator Alex Hirsch. The news was confirmed Sunday by Takeuchi on Twitter, a decision that reverses the series’ previously announced Season 2 renewal.

His cinema is distinguished by its calm yet compassionate insight, looking past perceived social norms to illuminate the messier realities of family in a society that still conforms such relations to bloodline, age, gender, and class status — despite the inability of such traditional mores to measure the true health of a family unit.  Kore-eda’s latest film, “Broker,” is the first he’s made in South Korea, furthering the director’s travels abroad after his 2020 French melodrama “The Truth.
